As good as many more expensive compasses. And has extra features for the experienced user. It is pretty hefty, but not too heavy. I am enjoying using it.

The last thing you want to do is find you compass in the bottom of the gear bag, with a cracked dial. This one has an all metal frame and would survive in heavy gear bag and/or falls. Yet, the internals are still the same basic plastic you'd find on the basic models. This compass is surprisingly heavy and might be bothersome if you like to hold your's 24/7 while walking, and might be uncomfortable if worn around the neck. There is a loose fitting, nylon fabric case with a belt loop. It's thin and I feel that it might wear and tear quickly. The direction ring is sufficiently dampened. The angle gauge's arm, on my sample, is very loose and annoying. Which is held on by two screws that are easily removable if you're not going to use that feature. As it gets in the way while holding.

This is a fantastic compass. The compass is perfect and even has a sighting lens and calibration marks on the glass. The declination is even easier to set than on my original Silva Ranger compass. I gave it 4 stars because I found only one problem. The clinometer leaves a bit to be desired. Any wind or even a light breeze will cause it to read wrong. Also, if it isn't put away exactly correctly, it becomes crushed. Fortunately, it's easy to fix. Easy enough that I gave away my original Silva Ranger with the clinometer in the case. I liked this compass better than my Silva Ranger even if it might actually take two people to read parts of it.

I really like the features on this compass, accurate as far as I can tell. Good heavy duty compass which will go well with my survival stuff. Can't wait to give it a try.

If you don't, you could use this compass! It has the feel of quality soon as you take it out. Everything is tight, dosen't rattle, getting a bearing is as easy as ever with sighting glass magnifying numbers & hash marks. I will admit, the inclometer is a bit on the cheap side but that's the only thing I would say needs improvement.
