Filmed over 18 days in Utah, "Pirates of the Great Salt Lake" is the sort of low-budget film I enjoy most. Much of this is due to the natural goofball charm and "go for it" spirit of its most noted cast member, Kirby Heyborne. Heyborne, a fan favorite on the LDS (Latter Day Saint) film circuit, has genuine crossover appeal and has had his recent starring role on Fox's "Free Ride" to prove it. Here, Heyborne plays Cap'n Kirk, a "pirate" whose territory is the rough waters of the Great Salt Lake. You didn't know there were pirates on the Great Salt Lake? Arrrrr, Matey. Where ya been? Despite waters in which "it is impossible to drown" and the opposition of his widowed, Christian mother (Joyce Cohen), Cap'n Kirk lives his life camping out in the wild by night and helming his modest row boat by day. One day, he befriends Flint (Trenton James), a clean-cut Christian boy who pines away for the beautiful, bad boy lovin' restaurant hostess from his local seafood restaurant. Together, they set sail on the Great Salt Lake for adventures galore, to get some booty (Get your mind out of the gutter!), and to live out their lives as the pirates they were meant to be.Read full review
This is absolutely hysterical. This independent film has a cast of four main characters that take on different roles throughout the film, each tying in to their other role, including well known LDS film actor, Kirby Heybourne (The RM, Singles Ward, The Best Two Years etc). This is a great film that brings together the themes and costumes of Pirates of the Caribbean crossed with the humor of Napolean Dynamite and Hot Rod, a great, fun, adventurous and laugh out loud film for fans of the movies it brings together into one!
As an Australian, with no access to being able to see this movie for so long, ive been waiting... afloat in the great sea of patience for this to become available to me. After the great storm broke my ship I found myself with no more way of survival upon this great sea, and swam to the shores of persistance. So I bought the movie from an overseas source. My purchase proved fruitful, as the movie started off with the comedy I had been expecting for years. However, as someone who apparently wanted to see this movie more than the next marvel epic, I had no idea where the movie ACTUALLY goes. As it took a dark yet comical turn midway, I was still pleased with the humour. Some certainly unexpected twists and turns through the story keep things interesting, and prove that you don't need a hollywood budget to make a fantastic comedy. Understand that you can't expect a blockbuster film before watching, and you will be pleasantly surprised. WILL recommend.Read full review
