This is an EXHAUSTIVE, scholarly study of a little known Wilder manuscript which was not published in her lifetime, passed by her publishers, and perhaps should not have been. It is important because it was the first attempt by Wilder to tell her story, before it was edited by her daughter and sanitized by the publishers, and parts of it were used later for her other books, and even some of her daughter's. It was the starter dough which produced a batch of loaves. The author has taken great care to research names, places and incidents to bring out the stories behind the stories... adding photography, clippings and maps, and even vintage illustrations of her more famous books to enrich the reader's grasp of Wilder's world, and perhaps understand her better than ever before. This is the ultimate Laura keepsake and reference, for anyone who loves the legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder.Read full review

Totally answers any questions I ever wanted to know about Laura and her family. It’s a large, hefty tome, so if you aren’t a fast reader, it will take you a while to get through it, but’s so worth it. Photography woven throughout that adds to the reader’s enjoyment. The dust jacket is so beautifully done that it would make a great coffee table book. Totally great purchase; it’s worth every penny and then some!

This is Laura Ingalls Wilder's first attempt at writing down her life story, accompanied by lots of historical photos and annotations. It's a plain tale simply told, with few literary trimmings, but it became the source for the seven Little House books and is no doubt a truer account of what happened to the Ingalls family. It's catnip for the Little House fan and good reading for anyone interested in the lives of American pioneers. As with many books about Laura Ingalls, however, the annotations tend to minimise the crucial role Rose Wilder Lane played in her mother's success. I'd like to read more about the collaboration between these two women, which has long fascinated me.

Tons of information about the Little House years that wasn't included in the series. A lot of background information from other sources. A must have book for LIW fans.

This is a very good book, a must for Little House fans. I'm not even half way through but I can tell from what I've read that the way of live I had pictured in my head for the Ingalls family was not at all the way it really was. This book is a real eye-opener!!
