While it is an entertaining story for awhile, the book itself has little to do with either Zen or Motorcycle Maintenance, and a lot to do with both subjects. Pirsig has delved into the Metaphysics of Quality, a subject he continues in "Lila" a followup book in which the morality of quality is explored. I have a copy of one or the other whenever I take long rides and I am now on my third copy of Zen and The Art. I find the book(s) original, enriching and provocative, if somewhat tedious at times for my rather basic and minimalist mind. Like many books I enjoy, it can be read and re-read, revealing new facets that weren't obvious before. Before purchasing Zen and The Art, one would do well to sit and read a few pages toward the middle of the book. It may become a favorite.
Classic book, but the copy I got had been subjected to some water damage so it doesn't lie flat when I'm reading it. I supported the covers with packaging tape to make it easier to hold.

This book will stretch your thinking. I has some great introductions to philosophy that are presented in a way that you will probably be able to understand. All leads to the "Metaphysics of Quality" .
