The PENN CLA4000 reel is very smooth in both casting and retrieving, and it allows very long casts, too. The entire reel assembly is solidly built, and the extra heavy wire bail and large knob are easy to handle. I think the sealed ball bearings will continue to provide easy, smooth reel movement with little likihood of corrosive liquids or dirt getting into them. Its relatively light weight also means less fatigue at the end of a long fishing day. I am very impressed with the quality, at this moderate price level. I am planning on purchasing more of the Clash series reels in the future!

Bought two and neither lasted one month without problems. Evidently the salt water of the surf penetrated into the reels and greatly affected performance. One became useless and the rewind became extremely stiff. The other was very rough after a few goes in the surf.

I have purchased four of these to replace older Daiwa reels for in shore salt water fishing. I have used them a few times to date. I mated them with St. Ctoix 7.5 ft rods and braided line. With this set up they cast much farther than my old setup. I love the drag and the gearing system is very smooth. I have had great experience with Penn Slammers in the past for salt water fishing so I think they will hold up well. I recently purchased two Shimano Stradic CI 4+ reels and I will be doing my own long term comparison test between the Clash and the more expensive Stradic reels. Time will tell but I think the Clash will compare favorably and have the long term reliability that I am hoping for.

The Penn Clash offers a light weight body with smooth cranking. Combined with the best drag system in its' class this reel is built for all day comfort and the performance to get the job done. The carbon fiber trim lends itself to match up with rods with carbon fiber trim. A good value for the avid inshore fisherman at a price you can feel comfortable actually fishing with. Penn has a winner with the Clash.

I haven't had the clash long but I've used it a few times now and it has preformed flawlessly. It is smoother and noticeable lighter than my battle and conflict which makes it easier to cast all day. The large Soft knob on the handle is very comfortable and easy on your hand. Over all it's a great reel I can't wait to hook up with a big red with it and see how it handles.
