I decided to buy this book after reading the book "Sweet America" all about the lower East Side of New York..As a child but not in that time frame but in the 40's I use to spend many happy days there, when My Aunt took care of me while my parents worked, she lived at 89 Maulberry Street.. So needless to say that I bought,"How the Other Half lived" to see how life was prior to when I spent time there...It's a great book, with pictures, facts etc....Both these books woke up many happy memories for me..
I bought this for research on a book I am writing. Riis was the first person to explore the horrific conditions of early immigrant lives, prejudice, and living quarters. If folks think they have it bad NOW, Jacob Riis was a reformer who forced the country to look at the ugliness and begin humanitarian change toward the Irish, Italian, Jew, and all others coming to the land of opportunity in 1860's+. A great eye opener in regards to immigrant issues today. Americans hated immigrants then...the arguement has not changed...just the countries of immigration.
