The Peavey Vypyr is an essential part of any guitar player's arsenal. While you can't get EVERY effect there seem to be limitless possibilities to what you can do with this amp. It's easy to program, fun to mess around with, and even better to create unique sounds. The volume knob is a little touchy but it has a nice smooth action that allows the user to set the volume at just the perfect level. All the control knobs have the same smooth action and also feature semi-bright LEDs to indicate the selected setting. There is also a light that measures tempo, that you can adjust for faster or slower songs. There is even a built in tuner that I personally didn't like using but I've already got an electronic tuner. I'm sure the tuner works fine, I just didn't really give it a chance. This amp works best with the Sanpera I or II, I have the Sanpera I, it's really easy to use and makes switching effects in mid-play much easier. I think the folks at Peavey have really outdone themselves, this is the bet modeling amp I have ever used and I strongly recommend the Vypyr to anyone, no matter what kind of music you play.Read full review
To start..this amp is a solid state/digital combination amp..NOT a tube amp. If you are wanting an awesome tube amp sound, get a tube amp. You can not, and probably will never be able to get the "tube" tone and "tube" feel in anything other than a tube amp. Now that I have that out of the way... The transtube technology is a way that Peavey came up with to capture the aspects of a good tube amp and replicate that with solid state circuitry. The main reason I made my opening statement is because of this technology. People expect the amp to sound exactly like a big tube amp. If it isn't tube circuitry, it will not sound and feel exactly like a big tube amp. The components are inherently different and the one cannot exactly replicate the other. That said, the transtube technology does a phenomenal job of capturing everything (tone and feel) of a good tube amp. The Vypyr 30 has incorporated the transtube technology for use in the pre and power amp sections because Peavey decided after testing that the amplifier emulations were much better tone and feel wise with solid state technology versus digital. And they are correct. Digital (except the most extreme high-end)still does not sound as good as solid state when it comes to a guitar amplifier. Digital still sounds grainy and harsh, whereas solid state sounds good when used for guitar amp. The amplifier emulations in the vypyr really are quite accurate (keep in mind this is a $200 amp versus $2000+ amps). Impressive enough that I have since decided to ditch all my big tube amps and switch to using the Vypyr series (not the tube ones, just the solid state ones). The effects took a different route. Since space and cost are necessary to make a product sellable, doing a massive array of effects in the solid state realm is just not reasonable. So, instead Peavey chose to use the high-end Sharc processors to run the digital effects emulations. And were able to allow up to 5 high quality effects emulations to be run simultaneously. Some people complain about not being able to switch the order of effects to however they want, but we are talking about a $200 amp that sounds awesome, AND has a LOGICAL and most importantly, USEFUL effects layout. The distortion stomp boxes are before the preamp, the choruses are after the preamp, etc. I have had many people compliment me on how good of a tone i have and want to know what amp i am using. I find myself playing more, and enjoying practice more because the amp has ALL the tones I want (plus a bunch of extras), ALL the effects I want (and again...a bunch of extras), and they are all easily accessible. Now, I am a hardcore amp tweaker (have torn apart and tweaked all my tube amps to my liking), and I still don't feel like I am missing anything after playing through any of my vypyr's for about a year now. Finally, and this isn't a big deal to me, but for those of you who don't like fighting with your amp to get a good tone, your ship has arrived. This amp starts at a good tone with any of the preset amp tones. Even better, it extremely easy to take that starting point and tweak it to your liking, due of course to the near zero learning curve to operate these amps. The only downside, they don't tolerate bad power very well. I recently played a gig and the venue had bad power. We were seeing voltage drops from 110v down to 90v before the breaker finally tripped. everytime the voltage would drop, my vyper would "freak out" and change settingsRead full review
Power packed and feature rich amplifier. I was searching for a guitar amp that could do a few things with effects. When I discovered the Vypyr amp I wouldn't give up getting one. The effects range will keep me busy for months with ratty distorted tube amps to choir voice smoothness all in digital reproducible turns of a dial. 30 watts sounds small but the punch and clarity this box kicks out is studio/stage capable. I have a silly combination of a Peavey/Bass 2-15" and this little guy and the sounds are incredible. I call it pump and slice and everything nice.
Amazing Guitar amp extencive amount of effects. amazing tonallity from all amp models. planning on getting the 75 watt for bigger shows. highly recomended. i play metal and it can go from ac/dc to behemoth in a twist of a couple knobs. this amp has really let me find my tone. for any song if i need it a little harsher or more open this amp acomodates amazingly. ive already droped it 3 times down the stairs (accidently off course)And has sufferd no damage other than a scuff on the plastic.
This amp is very impressive. It have over 50 possible combinations with all of the settins that it has. With all of these settings you would have to pay well over 1000 dollars but with this amp you get it all in one package for a much lower price. All in all this is the best amp I have ever owned and I would deffinitly recommend this to a friend!
