On my specific device I received, the headphone jack balance is off. The right channel is much quieter than the left. (my rating assumes this is a quirk and a repairable issue) However, for my application, this doesn't bother me. The recorder does not appear to work with an unpowered microphone (I assume it expects a powered one), but it does work well with a line-in (it has an automatic gain control). Audio quality is typical for cassette tapes. It has noticeable but not excessive flutter. The on board speaker reminds me of a cheap shower radio, but the on board microphone does a good job. Any noise/distortion is going to be masked by the SNR of the tape itself and possibly the sound of the drive motor. All in all, I got pretty much what I expected. I was delighted to discover you can hear the tape while cueing/reviewing so that you can find your place easily.Read full review
