This receiver is a beast! I've had it for about 2 weeks now and I love it! The only drawback is its sheer size and the heat that it generates. Because of both of those, I had to remove the glass shelf above it on my component rack. Most shelving is rated for 50 lbs, but this unit is 52 lbs. That's not really going to make a difference but, due to its size, there wasn't enough clearance between the top of the unit and the self above it to dissipate the heat generated. That being said, I can't find a single thing thing to complain about. I loved the speaker calibration. It has a plug-in microphone and you just set the microphone where you want the sweet spot and the receiver does the rest. It detects how many speakers you have and adjusts volumes based on speaker size and distance to the microphone. My surround has never sounded so good! The remote is rather large, but it did do a good job learning from my other remotes, with the exception of my HD-DVD player.....won't control that one. It's a dead technology already and I'll eventually take the plunge and replace it with a Blu-Ray so I'm not too concerned. Over-all, this is a great buy. The drawbacks are minor and the good features more than make up for them. My comlaints tend to be nit-picky, but that's only because I can't find much to complain about. I couldn't touch a THX certified receiver for anywhere near what I paid for this one. The THD and signal-to-noise ratio specs are excellent. I highly recommend it!!Read full review
well i just recentlly bought and hooked this reciever up. its got plenty of connections on the back and hdmi inputs on it. easy setup menues right on the tv with a video wire witch is a plus. and sounds great weather its a dvd, blu-ray,or ps3 game. Some drawbacks i didnt know about but alot of newer recievers are doing it i dont now why its that it only has an on/standby button no botton for just shutting the thing completey off so it is allway drawing some power my elecrice bills high enough so i just put it on a surge protecter and flip the swich when done using the unit. and, that if you want to just use an hdmi cable the best cable for audio/video all on just one wire the newest thing out with it they dont just pass through when the unit is off such as say your satellite /cable receiver is wired with just an hdmi straight to the reciever which has 1 out back to the tv it will only work if the reciever is on. which myself anywway usually only use it for video games/a good movie on tv or dvd. so if i want to use my tv and just watch nothing great just browsing maby watch the news say i dont need souround with ya get me. so i wired another wire i had to buy to my tv straight from the box for that reason. but im not even sure if any just pass through they should. but overall i got it for a great price and sounds great what i got it for.and would recomend for the most part.Read full review
Onkyo makes great receivers and this is one of the best. Some newer units have hdmi issues but this one doesn't. I use it for audio only I ran a hdmi splitter from my cable box to the tv and to my receiver. I paired it with Polk Audio speakers and I used a splitter on the subwoofer out to have 4 subs. This system has all the power you need and more. I've never enjoyed movies so much.

I purchased this receiver because it has all the new formats of sound to play with so far everything has been great and sounds great. I have purchased new speakers and they sound great with it. It is easy to assign things to the hdmi inputs and has on screen display to make it even easier. The only two things that I have to complain about are one if you have read the reviews on this item you will read that the audyssey sound setup is very erratic. Which is true it does not program your speakers right, so make sure that once you use it to set up your system go back in and adjust your speakers to the levels you want. The only other thing to complain about is that it doesn't have switching built in on it. But since the next cheapest receiver that does have it built in is $400 more I think I will be ok. Other than those minor things this is probably one of the best receivers out there for the money I highly recomend this system.Read full review
If you get a chance to see this in action, take it. I know Onkyo was really on the ball when they made this receiver. Yeah I had to download the manual and it was kind of spacey, but in the end I set it up and think it really rocks! This is too big for my room but the room is hugely exciting to be in now that the system is set up. You just want to listen to the sound, whether it is music or TV. Who gives a crap about what the neighbors think! By the way I hooked some Onkyo 7.1 channel speakers to this and had it feeding an LG brand LED TV monitor. I used a Samsung blue ray disc player plus a Panasonic DVD/VCR combo and DISH as inputs. I am also trying to hook up a Window Media Center extender to it. It has more than enough ports to configurate all that.
