Sound quality is excellent. Didn't want to spend the extra $$ for HDMI input (this receiver just does pass-through). Comes with a microphone to do it's own process to balance the speaker, though fine tuning for my set-up was required. Considering the price and expandability, it works perfect for me. One drawback. The remote doesn't seem to allow for programing a sequence of commands, say to start up all the components. This is a drawback for a home theater system.
The receiver came two days after I ordered. Simple but secure packaging. Came with AM/FM antenna. Installation was a breeze. I didn't like the fact that the receiver did not have outlets on the back of it like my old Pioneer did. It just adds to the cable clutter. But who cares... I hooked up all the wires. Since I have the Sony Bravia TV with the same A/V hookups I did not use the HDMI pass-through. I just outputed single Optical Audio Cable. It was the cleanest install that I could do. Well to the setup... I hooked the mic and started the auto speaker adjustment. It took 3-5 min and it was ready to go. Although I have cheap Kenwood speakers, I have never heard them sound so crisp and deep at the same time. We watched a few movies and the difference was day and night. I'm planning on getting a set of Fluance surround speakers and was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Onkyo is capable of bi-amplificating front speakers, a feature that is mainly found on $$$$ receivers... This is by far the best buy for the money. I thought about going with Sony, Kenwood, the newer ONKYO's. All of which were priced in the $300-500 mark. This system sounds just as good as any of these, of course it doesnt have the same video features but the sound is just as good for $190. I wanted sound so I let the TV work the video...Read full review
i purchased this receiver to primarily play music, with movies on the rare occasion. this receiver was my first choice because it does 7 channels or 5 with the front main speakers bi-amped. i've never had a bi-amp setup so i was really wanting to hear the sonic benifits claimed was true... after a month with my new onkyo the answer here is yes and no. yes the system plays loudly, and very musically sounding. either way it performs very well. with its included microphone and set up procedure, the darn thing dials itself in perfectly. my equilizer i just bought a few months ago is obsolete, because the onkyo eq's each song, literally note for note to extract the best possible sound it can considering and calculating my room response, speaker capibilities and the music source itself. the good news is it takes marginal or poor sounding recordings and makes them sound very good. the downside here, after about 150 hours of critical listening, is it takes the great sounding recordings and makes them sound only "very good," equal to, sonically, the bad recordings. the question, then, is what constitutes "very good?" well very good is just that, better than most. the only few sound systems i've heard that sound better cost thousands of dollars more and include mcintosh or crown power amps or use big altec or klipsch horn loaded speakers. my goal here was great sounding receiver for under $300. mission accomplished. in comparison my last two receivers were yamaha, and pioneer befor that. this easily beats those plus the sony and aiwa i had years ago. at this price point i really feel this onkyo is way better than its compitition. rock on!!!Read full review

After looking for a reasonably priced HDMI capable home theater receiver and comparing features, I decided to go with Onkyo. The Onkyo TX series receivers I've found to be feature-packed and have great performance and reliability. One specific feature that sets the TX-SR506 apart from the other brands is how it auto-calibrates based on the speaker's performance and sound dynamics of the room. There's no calculation or guess-work - you just plug in the calibration mic and this unit does three sound samplings from each speaker and auto-calibrates each channel's surround setting for perfect surround sound. Even if you don't have matching speakers the Onkyo can compensate (within reason) for the mismatch. This feature isn't in all Onkyo models so look for the mic port (on the front of the receiver). I've been so impressed with this receiver's surround capability I've bought a second one. The TX-SR506 also supports two zones (one 7.1 surround and one stereo) allowing you to play full surround in one room and a completely different stereo output to another room simultaneously.
