I performed in the stage play of this show in highschool in the 1950s. It was one of the great Broadway NY shows of the 1940s, and had alot of good songs, and only a bit of depression as poor old Judd, who worked and lived in the smokehouse seemed to need some of today's modern anti-depressants, but even in the end, everything turns out OK, Happily ever after. This and 7 Brides fo 7 Brothers is a great play, as well as Finian's Rainbow, with its bit of racism and political badguys. Life was much simpler then; when Kansas City was 'about as fur as you could go' with its big city views, as seen from the perspective of an Oklahoma farmboy. It is a good follow up to Little House on the Prarie, or other fanciful stories of the 19th Century to the early 20th Century. Follow Curly with the surrey with the 'fringe on the top' to Ado Annie who was a 'girl who cain't say no', to all the unforgetable characters that populated the Oklahoma Territory. The underlying words for today are in the song 'the farmers and the cowboys should be friends' Is that the problem in most countries, different factions disputing land use? See if you can watch it without drawing parallels to other societies and current eventsRead full review
This is a personal favorite from my childhood as my father took us to the movie and purchased the LP, so I learned all the songs by heart. I love the wholesomeness of the story, the music, and the excellent performances of the actors, singers, and dancers. Sadly, "They just don't make them like this anymore". If you've never seen "Oklahoma!" before, be prepared...there is A LOT of singing and dancing. After all, it's a musical. In my research, I learned that the newer DVD reproduction was not the quality of the VHS tape. I purchased the VHS and am very happy with it. I do hope that eventually they will make a better DVD as VHS format does have it's eventual aging issues.
awesome vhs's! love the way the tapes our lay-ed out!

This is one of the best musicals every made. Enchanting. The music comes alive. It won two Academy Awards for Best Sound and for Best Music Score. The movie was the start of Shirley Jones' career and her and Gordon MacRae are magical together. You will not go wrong in buying this movie. I give this movie 5 Stars!!!
Oklahoma is a fantastic show, and movie. We run senior citizen bus trips and found the older musicals are a big hit. The color is great, no one gets offended by off-color comments, and the songs put everyone in a good mood. There's nothing like these older shows.
