I've had this lens out a few times for some shooting and it's performed well. The VR is great which means I can feel comfortable shooting hand held down to 1/250th and even 1/160 in some cases. This isn't Nikon's top of the line so the f4.5-5.6 is as good as it gets but so far that hasn't stopped images from turning out good. The bokeh/background compression is great at 400mm and at the right angle you even get a nice tilt-shift effect. This lens is heavy so don't plan on shooting all day hand held. I've already ordered my monopod for shooting football/baseball games this season. The AF is a little noisy so probably not a great option for skittish wildlife and the VR clicking on and off is also a little noisy. Overall, for the price I paid, fantastic value!

This lens is heavy and durable so it’s not easy to hand hold for long. A tripod or monopod is recommended. It is not a VR-s and needs to be used with a Nikon that has a motor for the autofocus to work. As an example, you would need to manually focus the lens if combined with a Nikon D3200. The Nikon Nikkor 80-400mm AF VR is an older model but works great for nature photography. The autofocus is a little slower than VR-s lenses but it doesn’t bother me. I’ve been satisfied with the photographs I’ve achieved while using the lens with my Nikon D7100.

For $540.00 this is the best 80-400 AF/VR I could find. This model was marketed 10 years ago. The new model AF-S, selling for $2,000 has better features, focuses faster etc. The AF-D focusing is slower but fast enough for me. The VR feature works great and I'm not using a tripod ever after viewing results. I do not shoot sports. The hand held landscape shots at 300-400mm are all very sharp. Maybe not the sharpest lens at 400mm but noticeably better than the 100-300 MF Tokina lens I bought 35 years ago. I use the back button on D810 to focus and am very happy with that method.

Excellent lens except it's on the heavy side. The tripod mount is excellent and easily balances the camera. Picture quality and focus speed are great. Great lens!

The lens was immaculate, I wouldn't have been able to tell it from new. I am using it on a Z9 I debated spending a lot more for the 100-400 z mount but being the stops were the same and it focuses quickly enough. I shoot outdoor sports and air shows and this range is perfect. The lens is a quality piece of glass. The images are sharp and contrasty.
