This is one of Fleetwood Mac's classics. I bought this 1973 pre-Buckingham/Nicks album is the 80's, and it remains one of my personal favorites. While 'Hypnotized' is the hit and the most recognizable song on 'Mystery to Me', 'Emerald Eyes' is the most powerful song, and one of Bob Welch's best contributions to FMac. It is a dreamy tempo but has a strong melody. When I think of this version of Fleetwood Mac, 'Emerald eyes' is the song I think of; and 'Mystery to Me' goes into my CD player. 'Believe Me' is Christine McVie good, uptempo pop, similar to what she would do later with the supergroup. 'Just Crazy Love' is in the very same vein and her strongest contribution to this record. John McVie's infectious base carries the ska-like 'Forever'. 'Keep on Going' is a pleasant Welch song sung by Christine McVie and shows of the bands musical talents. Now, Bob Welch takes control of this record. The City is a blues romp with very nice slide guitar by Bob Weston. Miles Away and Somebody are Steady blues rock songs with Weston licks complementing Welch's melody. 'The Way I Feel' is a McVie piano-based love song that breaks up the blues/rock stride a bit. Their cover of the Yardbirds 'For Your Love' is a real gem, and smoother than the original. The band eases out of the record with Christine's 'Why'. There is not a weak song in the bunch. This is a perfect balance of the blues beginning of the band and the mainstream perfection that was to become of the band. Bob Welch, as an artist, shines brightly; and the band's cohesiveness is remarkable!Read full review
I have loved this since it came out. I like this Period of FM most. They where an incredible blues band with Peter Greene. Then he left and this was the great transition period into a more Rock/pop rock band into full pop when “ She” joined the band. Mick on the drums really stand out. On here. The hypnotic beat on “Hypnotized” and the playing on other songs is fantastic. And it’s not buried in the mix . Well worth the price.
