This author has the gift of being able to teach, not just drone out information. I started out with his book, "Investing for Dummies", then bought this book to get more specific information about mutual funds. I appreciate that he was continually referring you forward back to other sections - for example, there is a section on tax considerations. While discussing age considerations and asset allocation, he referred back to the tax section for a refresher that would help with decision-making. There was a fair amount of humor (warnings about upcoming paragraphs that investment nerds would find informative, but that the average person could skip without losing any instruction), and plenty of pros and cons discussion about various mutual funds - especially specific companies and products. A bonus is that there are chapters included about how to assess how your funds are doing after they are set up, plus some nitty-gritty about using the computer to keep track, and a couple of summary sections of "tens" (ie: ten common mutual funds investing mistakes). This is the book to get if you're pretty much completely uneducated about mutual funds, and want some solid info to de-mystify the entire subject!Read full review
Great book. Very well written, but reads like a textbook (ie quote boxes, short stories intermittently included in the chapters, etc.). Because it is similar to a college textbook, it can be dull reading, but it is very informative. The thing I like most about this book is that the author begins the book assuming you know nothing about mutual funds. Which for me was exactly the case. Don't let this deter you if you're a seasoned investor looking to polish your skills, however, because the chapters build on one another and facilitate easy navigating if you'd like to skip the beginner stuff. Another positive is the release year of this edition. Although it is not 100% current, many of the facts are still good and it reflects the contemporary economy. Overall, it's a good resource whether you're a beginner trying to figure out which type of investing is right for you, or if you'd just like a professional's opinion on which companies/stocks are worth investing in in our current economical stasisRead full review
Great introduction into alternative use of money when compared to just GIVING it to banks
