I watched the series first, then read the books and then watched these movies, so it's interesting to see how it evolved. In the books, Murdoch has a mustache and a girl friend who he sleeps over with. He has a tiny office that can barely hold 2 people and he uses the wall as a chalkboard to write notes. Murdoch does not use all the technology in the books that are used in the TV series. They don't even use "finger marks". Crabtree is a giant of a man, married with lots of children. Brackenreid is in the books, but he's very mean and almost hates Murdoch. The first mention of Julia Ogden is in book 2, where she is a middle aged woman, and has one phone conversation with Murdoch. By the end of the series of books, she appears a couple more times, but is not a love interest. The movies don't use the tricks of the technology that Murdoch comes up with in the TV series, but our hero still manages to solve the cases. The movies do begin to use "finger marks". Julia Ogden is a younger woman in the movies than the books, and has a more prominent role. Brackenreid isn't quite as mean in the movies as in the books. Murdoch has a much bigger office, but uses the wall as a chalkboard, like in the books. I found it interesting that Helene Joy, who plays Dr. Julia Ogden in the TV series, plays a different character in "Under the Dragon's Tale". She may be the only actor who was in the movies and the series. The movies followed the basic storyline of the books fairly well, with some minor changes. The movies have the same feeling as the books and the TV series. Overall, I enjoyed these movies. Just know going in that they are different than the TV series.Read full review

the characters are very poor compared to the series on cbcwith yanik bisson, jonny harris, helene joy and rest of cast. Brackenreid is too overbearing and murdoch too timid. The stories are okay; also did not like the nudity. All in all i would not buy this, even though i love the series with the above mentioned actors.a huge disappointment and way overpriced. Stick to the tv series.

These movies are an almost necessary introduction to the later Murdoch Mysteries series. They introduce the characters and their individual personalities. Even though the actors in the later series are different, they're portrayed similarly to the movie characters.
