I bought this book because of the author, Mike Nelson. He's given the world ten years of Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffs, Mike Nelson's Mind Over Matters, and Movie Megacheese (along with his recent work on Legend Films projects such as Rifftrax.com). This is his first novel, and it was great to finally hear an original story from a man who has spent a career making fun of other people's. Death Rat is a very fun and entertaining story about an aging writer who suddenly finds his life turned upside-down. In an attempt to get back the dignity that has been stripped from him he writes a novel about a man trapped in a mine with a six foot killer rat. He uses a younger more rugged looking decoy to act as the author of his book, unfortunately, his decoy sells the book as non-fiction. Now to avoid lawsuits and possible jail time, the author and his new co-conspirator must go to a small town with a population of about forty people and convince them all to assist in convincing the world that a man was indeed trapped in one of their mines, and had indeed fought a six foot rat. Very funny stuff, and it is obvious as you read it that each sentence was carefuly thought through to ensure you get the maximum comedy value for your hard earned dollars.Read full review
Mike Nelson is one of the funniest men around, but a great story teller, I'm afraid not. I love the guy, I'm a huge fan but I couldn't even get half way into this novel. His characters suck and I really don't care about them. They even have annoying names. Pontius Feeb? It's awful I don't want that ringing through my head. I am looking for a place to give this book away, and it did have a funny line or two, but really Mike I set the bar SO much higher than this for you (as if he is reading this right now)
