This is a spiral-bound book that completely wraps around itself no matter where you open it up. Targeted toward the experienced, inexperienced,or student MT, it pretty much follows the AAMT Book of Style (BOS)2nd Edition with FEW exceptions. This book's ADVANTAGE is that it covers the same topics as the BOS--only with much greater detail and analysis. It covers many more topics that the BOS does not address. No longer are you confused about "what to do." This book gives many, many more examples than the BOS does. I believe that if it were not for AAMT's political clout, THIS book would be THE industry-standard reference book for medical transcriptionists. It is THAT good...and it is far superior to the BOS. I was issued the BOS from my MT school, so I have to use it. The Medical Transcription Guide clears up all the vague, messy issues that the BOS creates but does not fully explain. This book includes detailed explanations, in the form of "do's and don'ts," in 49 (very detailed) chapters: * Abbreviation and Symbols (Includes danger listings) * Address Formats for Letters and Forms of Address * Apostrophe * Brief Forms, Short Forms, and Medical Slang * Capitalization * The Colon * The Comma * Compounds * Dash * Drugs and Drug References (NICE!) * Editing * Electronic Mail * Envelope Preparation * Eponyms * Exclamation Mark * Faxing Documents * Grammar * HIPPA Guidelines * History and Physical Format (Very good for beginners!) * Hyphen Use and Word Divisions * Laboratory Terminology and Normal Values (NICE!) * Letter Format * Manuscripts * Medical Reports (Autopsy, Chart/Progress Notes, Discharge Summaries, Reports: Operative, Pathology, Radiotherapy & many more!) * Memos, Minutes, and Other Reports * Metric System * Numbers * Obstetric Terms * Parentheses * Period and Decimal Point * Plural Forms * Possessives * Progress Notes or Chart Notes * Proofreading and Revisions * Question Mark * Quotation Mark * Reference Materials and Publications (Extensive, includes web) * Rules to Transcribe By * Semicolon * Slang Expressions and Unusual Medical Terms * Slash (Virgule) * Spacing with Punctuation Marks * Spelling * Time * Underlining and Italics * Vitae Format and Preparation * Working From Home * ZIP Codes 11 Appendixes Include: * Abbreviations Commonly Used * Selected Abbreviations * Brief Forms, Short Forms, and Medical Slang * French Words Used in Medical Records (with pronunciation guide) * Genus and Species Names & Clinically Significant Current Taxonomy * Homonyms and Sound-alike Words * Latin Phrases * Plural Forms * Sound Variations of Syllables * Unusual Medical Terms (e.g., scotty dog's ears, devil's grip, cake mix kit) You won't be disappointed with this book. It is much easier to use than AAMT's Book of Style. It is much more comprehensive and explains everything the BOS covers AND much more. Unlike the BOS, this book does NOT leave you guessing or give you the "clear as mud" feeling. If I had limited funds and had to choose between Marcy Diehl's Medical Transcription Guide or AAMT's Book of Style, I'd chose the Medical Transcription Guide every time. I will this book again; I will NOT buy the BOS. The only spot where I have found any difference between the two books has to do with the capitalization of the genus name when it appears alone. The BOS touts lower case; Marcy Diehl, upper case. What your employer wants is what matters. Great book!Read full review
