Over the years, the mechwarrior games have been my son's favorites (age 15 now). The player finds himself in a 40 ft. tall, highly armored vehicle which is superior to most of the other vehicles in the game. I say it's all about shooting. He says it's all about aggressive politics. Mechwarrior is in a different category from the role playing game like the Lord of the Rings series, which he also loves. This is what he says: I had been wanting this game for a long time, and when people thought they had given it to me for Christmas, they had only given me expansion packs. I was really excited when I finally got it. The game is really fun and pulls the person into the plot, I finished all but the last level in a few days after getting it. But I haven't finished the last level yet because it's hard. Anyway, this game is great. The mechwarrior series has me hooked. As for the weapons, they are all believable. A thousand years from now, I can see the PPC's throwing lightening into an opponent. Some people enjoy the huge variety of missiles and ballistic weapons, but my favorites are the lasers. I like the fact that they let you create your own weapon layout and customize your mech just the way that suits you. Also I love gauss rifles, the slugs that are launched fill me with glee. The plot is also believable, coming back from fighting the clans, to seeing your homeworld under opression, and your family murdered; that throws the player into an amazing revolution. Ever since mechwarrior 2, I've looked at those vehicles and wanted to be in a real one, an Atlas, or Daishi, or the new Mad Cat mk. II? What more could the player need? Besides, there is the possibility of multiplayer, and that is always fun. This is a recommended Christmas present -- just make sure you get the right one first.Read full review
I grew up playing the game. It's been a while since I've played. When I saw the listing online, I couldn't resist. As a pathological geek, I love the roll playing aspect of it. The fact that you can customize the mechs is a real turn on. As a game concept, it is archaic compared to modern shoot me up games but provides that good old fashioned nostalgic gaming experience. I'm working on setting up my gaming server. Perhaps, I might see you there. If you see The Chupacabra on DieMechDie, don't hesitate to say HI!
The mechwarrior GAME series was the best ever. Great mechs to build and great wars to fight. Still not tired of this one.

I have a couple PCs, one with XP on it and the other has Windows 7. The game will not run on either machine. It's probably a video issue or some other compatibility problem but so far I can't get it to run. Back in the day this was a really cool game. I do have Mechwarrior Mercenaries running OK, but not Vengeance. Yet.

I haven't really played much of it yet since I'm still trying to beat Mechwarrior 3. But I did play the first mission and the training exercises. Unfortunately when Mechwarrior was handed to a new studio, they decided to change a lot of things. The graphics are much better, at the cost that the sounds aren't as good and the controls are shoddy. But since 4 had the most add-ons, I'm hoping it will make up for this later in content.
