Great gem of a beat-em game that was sadly overlooked by many because it was released nearly at the end of the Super Nintendo's (SNES) life when most gamers had already moved on to the Playstation, Sega Saturn, and even the N64 by 1996. What a shame, because Capcom really delivered in what was a sort-of-sequel to X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse also released on SNES. It had some great looking 2D graphics, very impressive for SNES. The gameplay was top-notch as it mixed beat-em gameplay with fighting game styled move-sets. You could play as Wolverine, Spider-Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man. Your goal was to gather the Infinity Gems and to battle various Super-Villains in various Marvel Universe locations. A thrill for comic fans and beat-em up game fans. However it had a couple bad-points for it: 1. The cover art was boring. Come on, it was based off of a comic, you could have slapped all kinds of awesome stuff from the Marvel vault on that plain grey cartridge, instead we simply get a label that reads "Marvel Super-Heroes: War of the Gems." That's it, no artwork on the sticker for you. 2. It's HARD! It took me a while of trial and error before I finally beat this borderline torturous game. They don't give you break in the beginning areas. 3. The Hulk looks freaking ridiculous. I mean seriously, what is he doing when you just stand there? It looks like he's trying to make himself vomit.Read full review
Marvel Super Heroes War of the Gems is an action / beat em up that puts you in control of 5 of the worlds greatest superheroes: Ironman, Spiderman, Captain America, Wolverine, and Hulk. Each hero has his own unique traits and special moves in the game. The colorful/cartoony graphics on this game give it a "comic-book" feel. It definately reminds me a lot of "X-men Mutant Apocalypse" on the SNES because of the graphics and character moves. It is good to note, though that this game is harder than X-Men Mutant Apocalypse because not every character is good in every level and you have to figure out which character is best for each situation. All in all, I would highly recommend this game to Marvel fans and to anybody else that enjoys playing action / beat em ups.
This was one of my first super nintendo games back when I was 8 years old. Now, Im a grown up and I had the chance to buy it brand new. I still remember those good days where I could use spiderman, iron man and captain america. Is like saying marvel vs capcom for the play station. Thats how good the game was. Wasnt too long or short and there were many special moves as well as bad bosses. Really recommend this game to people who like marvel and want to see how old school was when it came to marvel super heroes.
Excellent game, very funny, one of the best titles for Super Nintendo

I loved this game!!! It was alot better than X-Men: Rise of Apocalypse....that game is impossible to beat. This game however is the opposite. You can choose from Marvel heroes: Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man & Captain America. Not a whole lot of characters to choose from but what do you expect from a 1996 Super Nintendo game. This game is also one of the last produced SNES games so the graphics & colors are top notch and use all of the Super Nintendo's potential into this game. The levels are fun and the whole game evolves around the Infinity Gauntlet comic series of the early 90's. Although it doesn't stay close to the comics in anyway, it's still one of the few Marvel games of it's time to really give the "Marvel" feel to the player in a 16-bit game. I highly recommend this game for 2-D action fans!!!!Read full review
