The guitars and vocals on this release provide the listener with more variety than their other cd's and most other pop-punk outfits in this genre. Here the two are mixed more to the forefront and the tempos of each song have much variety. One I'm Waiting For has great snare and sudden breaks. Be My Escape, an instant classic, has nice mellow interludes and sweet BGV's, but is spiritually vague. They also tackle some political stuff with Beating a Dead Horse and Death and Taxes. There is some edgy regret in Bury the Hatchet, which maintains their punk sensibilities. Hating Who I've Been is an endearing ballad full of self-revelation and apology. Let It All Out is probably the worst song and is a very wimpy ballad but, When I Go Down is an acoustic masterpiece dealing with heartfelt regret (also featuring Switchfoot's 'foreman'). The choruses are memorable and encourage singing along, especially with High of 75 and Hating Consequences. While they can be a little self-loathing at times, they encourage self-improvement and unselfishness. This is a good pop-punk band and this is probably their best cd. They are witty and satirical, talented and sincere.Read full review
This won't be of much help, probably but, for what it's worth... my 13 yr. old absolutely loves this RelientK title. It's a cd but puts it in the player, sits on the couch and stares at the t.v., and sits there and just listens. And talks; "Mom, this is my favorite song." "I love this song." "Mom, this is a really good one." "Mom, you like this one." "Mom...." You get the idea. I get the run-down on every song, every time it plays which, at our house, is A LOT! I like Relient K myself, but it's not the type of music I can 'meditate' with but it sure is for my daughter. At one point a rather raucous song was playing and I looked up to see her sitting on the couch, eyes closed, and totally immersed in it. Personally, I could not peacefully meditate in that music but, for her, she says it is it for her. She listens to the words in the songs, and the RelientK style is what she gets into. If you or your children are into Christian punk/whatever it is, you might just like this one.Read full review
Relient K is by far my favorite band, and they've out done even themselves with this album. To say this is their best album yet is an understatement. The vocals are great, the lyrics, amazing, as always. The music, too, is likely their best, and very catchy, like usual. Be My Escape and More Than Useless are two quality songs; I believe they were released to the pop industry as well. High of 75 is catchy with intriguing puns. My Girl's Ex-Boyfriend is excellent for healing hearts and those in the right relationship. Who I Am Hates Who I've Been triggers some deep thought. All of their songs on this album, though, are trademark Relient K: fun, upbeat, incredible lyrics, and laced with Christ. Enjoy! :)
I love this album. Every struggling Christian should listen to it. The message is deep.
