The book begins by telling about yarns and needles. For a novice knitter wanting to learn how to knit a sock this book is a good way to start. The instructions and pictures show how to cast on, how to make an increase and a decrease along with two different ways to bind off. There is also an explanation as to why it's a good idea to make a "swatch" which to any one that doesn't knit would be a sample, which gives you an idea of whether your knitting is too loose or too tight which will effect the out come of your project. There is a nice needle conversion chart in the beginning of the book so whether you have US, Metric or UK needles you will be able to adapt them to the pattern you pick. The instructions for each sock are quite clear and detailed.
