The Science Patrol's futuristic submarine prowled the lakes and seas of Japan in three different episodes of the original Ultraman TV series (1966). The mini-sub was finally made available as a model kit about ten years ago by Hasegawa. Their version, about 5 inches long in 1/72 scale, was only sold packed with a re-issue of their kit of the Science Patrol's Jet VTOL rocket plane, and that set can now run as high as $300 on the secondary market. Bandai comes to the rescue in 2016 with a fine new model of the Science Patrol submarine that you can own for cheap! This version runs exactly 4 inches long. It is cleverly molded in silver and red plastic so as to require no painting, if you prefer. Flawless tiny decals are included for all three versions of the sub: Hayata's S-16, Arashi's S-20, and Fuji's S-25. A delightful bonus in this Bandai kit is an additional micro-model of the sub, only 1 3/4 inches long, scaled to be carried underneath the Jet VTOL model that Bandai also offers in this series of small Ultraman "mecha" kits. Both versions of the mini-sub appear to be just about perfectly accurate, including obscure details such as the searchlight mounted within the prow. On the larger model, Bandai designers even worked in a little sliding lever that allows you, during construction, to recall a scene in the premiere episode by slowly raising the conning tower. Just you try to do that without smiling! I couldn't. What a hoot. Simple to build, highly accurate, and inexpensive: this little kit is for anyone who ever enjoyed the classic vehicles of the Science Patrol. Get it while you can! —reviewed by Capt.
