It is ultimately a story of understanding and a story, in a real sense, about the struggles that people face in everyday life. The movie deals with a town choir that competes in a national competition. The main focus of the story zeroes in on two members and their famileis, Dolly Parton's and Queen Latifah's. Through the competition both families come together and pull the choir to victory, yet their is a slight note that must be offered. When watching the video their is a conflict that ensues with Latifah's character and her daughter in the hotel that must commented on: they are both right in what they say. Though this is just a personal opinion but when Latifah's character talks about her beauty, she does not come across as completely believable. What the daughter says about her being insecure seems to be a bit more than true. They do have a resolution, though. The other thing to note is that Latifah's conflict as the mother is resolved with the sense that it has greater importance, yet Dolly Parton's problem is pretty severe as well. It would have been nice if some resolution or for the lack of a better word, "blessing" been put upon Dolly Parton. Overall, it is a good comedy, and it does get pretty real when dealing everyday church politics, but the conflicts are subject to personal views.Read full review
This movie is enjoyable to watch. You will laugh, cry, and cheer for this little choir group. It showed that everyone brings their issues with them and it's up to everyone in the group to pull together and make it work. The music is fantastic and features some wonderful remakes as well as new material written by Dolly Parton, three new songs including her self-penned haunting "From Here To The Moon And Back" that she wrote for her real-life husband. Both Dolly and Latifah sing in the movie. There are also some wonderful remakes of both classic and pop songs including Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" and Chris Brown's "Forever". If you are expecting a simple, fun, enjoyable movie then this is for you. If you want complex fleshed out characters in complex drama scenes then this is not for you.Read full review
I was talked into buying this movie by my 14 yr old grandson. He made a good choice! Good plot, good characters, songs you’ll be singing long after the movie is over. And then there’s Dolly and Queen Latifah! Two different characters who play off each other so well! A movie well worth purchasing, because you’ll want to see this one time and time again!
