Soft maple neck, but adjusted up good, the pickups are fine for a beginner, I installed a semour Duncan JB in the bridge position, that woke it up. Emg 81 85 combo would also be a good choice.mine came with .009 strings on it, replaced with 11s for some bite.. the trem is powder coated brass, average..works fine, install foam pad behind the springs to quiet them. It's a 300 dollar guitar, you can't expect top shelf sound or feel for the money, but with a few tweaks they play quite well.

I love Jackson guitars, but this one is great. The binding looks cool, it's fairly light, and its playability is definitely a 10. I was able to lower the action to an almost ridiculous height, barely above the frets. The sound is good, and the tremolo stays in tune even after a big dive-bomb.
