I run an ancient LGA 1366 socket system, which used to harbor an i7 920. Although still functional, my veteran i7 920 had fell behind in speed compared to the requirements of newer software; CPU intensive games started to bottleneck the system which has a GTX 1070 as the GPU. After using my i7 920 for years, and couple months overclocked, I decided that I could still benefit and extend the life of the system by upgrading the CPU to a Xeon W3680, one of the last chips running on LGA 1366. The product arrived in a month or so and I quickly installed it on my Gigabyte X58-UD3R motherboard, which I had confirmed beforehand that it supported the chip. The PC booted perfectly and I instantly saw the benefit of the higher clock speed, in simple day-to-day operations as well as gaming. The W3680 has 6 physical cores, which means a performance increase in hyper-threading and multi-tasking as well. I even managed to overclock the chip to 4.3GHz on air, having load temperatures around 70 degrees celcius. Overall, pretty happy with the purchase; if this chip dies before my motherboard, I might even order another one just to continue using the system. Read full review

Love this processor. It rivals some low end i7 processors today. It has 6 physical cores with hyperthreading so it has a total of 12 cores (6 physical and 6 logical). The best part is that this processor is unlocked meaning it can be overclocked! I've clocked up to 4.0Ghz safely and stable. Great procesor!!!!

I replaced a Xeon W3530 CPU with this one in my Dell T3500. The higher clock speed and two extra cores provided a significant boost in performance. I also installed an SSD. This CPU performs very well even by today's standards!

I accidentally fried my core i7 920 and needed a new CPU for my ASUS P6T motherboard. This is not any of the newer or deluxe versions of this motherboard. This is the original version. This is one of the CPU's that I wanted to get years ago, but could not afford. Works great and my system is back up and running. I couldn't be happier. Was very easy to install and apply the CPU grease that goes between the CPU and the heatsink/fan assembly. It actually takes longer to get the assembly to seat properly than it does to install the CPU! The worst part was trying to get Windows to load again because the computer had shut off so many times due to overheating that it got corrupted. I ended up having to install a new copy. Now to learn how to overclock.

Was looking for a "best case" alternative to the "X" i7 core cpu, checked the passmark ratings and this was rated signficantly higher and cost less than half as much, installed it, had to get another copy of Windows 7, forgot that the different cpu would be an issue with activation, but it's worth it for the much better performance. There's another Xeon in this series that's a little faster but not by enough to make it worth the added cost, this one was a big step up from the next one down which was selling for almost as much. This has worked out real well, it's extended the life of this system by performance improvement and am getting a lot more out of the EVGA X58 motherboard with 16 gig ram than before.
