Do you have an older LGA 1150 platform that you're not ready to part ways with? Do you want a CPU with i7 performance at an i3 price? Are you (mostly) disinterested in overclocking? If you answered "Yes" to all three of these questions, this quad-core, octo-thread Xeon E3-1246 v3 CPU is for you. It has breathed new life into my system. My outgoing dual-core Pentium G3258 gave all it had (and a little bit more with some overclocking) for 5 years, but newer software (especially games) is able to utilize more threads which the G3258 does not have but this Xeon does have. To be fair, the i7 performance of this CPU I mentioned earlier would be i7 performance circa 2014. Its performance would probably fall somewhere between the i3 and i5 CPUs of today (2019). But those processors would require a new motherboard and new memory. A discrete video card is not required since this CPU has integrated graphics (HD P4600). For what it's worth, it's slightly better than the iGPU (HD 4600) included in mainstream consumer Haswell CPUs (i3-4350, i5-4670K, i7-4790K, etc.). As for cooling, an Intel stock cooler should provide sufficient cooling. It has for me. Bear in mind that this is a Haswell Refresh part. If your motherboard has an Intel 8-series chipset (H81, B85, Q85, Q87, H87, Z87), use your current CPU to ensure you have the latest BIOS update. H97 and Z97 boards will work natively with this CPU. For only ~$100 (what I paid), I'm pretty certain this Xeon E3-1246 v3 CPU just gave my current system another 5-6 years of usability.Read full review
