As a retro computer hobbyist and having to resurrect some old hard drives that I had in storage, I found that this P4-3GHz, 800MHz, 478 socket CPU came in really handy. The Prescotts, with a 1mb L2 Cache and higher temperature tolerances, were a step above their Northwood counterparts. They were fast enough to make a Windows 95, 98, or Millennium system scream..a great compatible cpu for older Windows or DOS gaming in that 1996 - 2002 time machine. It will run XP fine but recommend 3+ GBs of ram and a decent size paging file. Even Windows 7 will run ok for daily tasks with its improved memory management. For now, it does the job just fine.

Bought the old P4 socket 478 3.0Ghz to see if it could run an old mobo sitting in the garage well enough to see YouTube in Win XP using a chrome browser. It passed. Runs smoothly compared to a P4 2.4 GHz runs erratically on YouTube. The order came earlier than expected...thanks!

replaced old 2.8 single core with out hyper threading. 3ghz with HT is noticeable faster speed when I boot and use windows. Single core is just too slow and not powerful enough for windows 7 and internet because the internet has been changing so much and requires more cpu power. Used parts just keep dropping in price. There is 3.5 same processor, I guess, but cost more. I think this is socket 478 pins, as opposed to lga 775. When windows runs background tasks the ht 3ghz works ok. The old single core (non ht) was painfully slow when windows was doing updates and a couple small tasks.
Well worth the price. The original 2.6 processor wasn't processing videos fast enough and virus scans were taking over an hour. The new processor has the videpos running normally, and anti virus takes 45 minutes. There has been no difference in stability so far (several weeks). Windows experience score for the processor increased much more than the processor speed would indicate, and I attribute it to the hyperthreading and the much larger on chip cache. Install as soon as you get it however. I procrastinated and found out after the return period for the first one that I ordered that the pins were bent and un-straightenable.
It's very powerfull for my old s478 system, easy to browse internet and play some old games.
