I will admit upfront that I purchased this DVD mainly because Miranda Otto plays one of the characters. That confession aside, I can recommend the film to anyone who enjoys somewhat dark mysteries with interesting characters and the relationships between them. "In the Winter Dark" was nominated for a number of Australian film awards and it is easy to see why. The acting is topnotch, especially Ray Barrett, who plays a tormented, grizzled old farmer, and Brenda Blethyn, who plays his similarly troubled wife. Each of the four main characters has unresolved pain, the reasons for which are hinted at and even partially revealed as the film progresses. They are neighbors in an isolated part of Australia, miles form the nearest town. Something has begun to kill livestock in brutal ways, and this mutual danger draws the old couple, a foul-mouthed, pregnant woman (Otto), and a reclusive bachelor (Richard Roxburgh) together. Pieces of the past blend themselves into the present as the tension increases, and unspoken family secrets are gradually given voice. One can laugh, tightly grip the armrests of the chair, cry, and feel shocked at different times during this film, which makes the most of the rural setting, especially at night and the interplay between the characters. Tragedy is a player throughout as well. My only complaint about the DVD is that there is no closed-captioning, so it is sometimes difficult to pick up dialogue with a strong Australian accent to it. This is a minor point, though, and need not dissuade anyone who likes a nice bit of psychological thriller.Read full review
Great movie especially as I live not far from where it was filmed.
