This important book from the author of three previous books on antique German dolls, features ground-breaking new research on the parian dolls produced by eight factories in Germany during the late 19th century. In preparing this book, the author travelled to the sites of the factories in Thuringia to dig for important artefacts; her labours uncovered over 1,000 porcelain shards that show the distinctive facial painting used by each factory highlighted in the book. These discoveries, combined with her collection of original porcelain factory ledgers and sample books, allow her to attribute with certainty the makers of these beautiful dolls, especially those produced during the 1860s and 1870s and previously designated as being by "unknown makers". Mary Krombholz also makes use of rare written records describing daily life inside a 19th-century porcelain factory to clearly delineate the significant role played by each worker in doll production. Her narrative clarifies not only the process of making porcelain dolls in the 19th century, but also presents a vivid picture of life in the Thuringian villages in which these factories were located. Over 350 colour photographs, all close views detailing the painting and decoration of these pieces, accompany the invaluable text, making this the most significant volume on German parian dolls to be published.

Identifying German Parian Dolls by Mary G. Krombholz
This is another outstanding reference by Mary. She made many yearly trips to Germany to study the area of Thuringia where most of the dolls were made for a hundred year period. She participated in many digs, bringing home hundreds of chards for further study. She has given collectors the information needed to determine the manufacturer when no marks are present.She is the ultimate authority of China and Parian head dolls. I have purchased every one of her books as well as attended her seminars where she is willing to share her vast knowledge with anyone interested in research or collecting of these dolls. I cannot say enough about her, both as a scholar and an individual. You cannot meet her without being affected by her passionate love for these dolls and those who created them. She has made many friends with the descendants and townspeople of the area. She is a treasure to the "Doll World."Read full review

Great Help for the Beginner Doll Maker
As a person starting to learn how to make dolls, I fell in love with the China, Parian & Bonnett dolls. However, I found it very hard to find information (or more like where to start)on these dolls. There didn't seem to be any mold company (with a few exceptions) that even carried molds where you could purchase them. This book has given me the names and makers of some of the molds that have come into my possession. One of which was made by Currier & Ives. I only thought that they did pictures and they had a cense of humor. They gave this quite child large ears and placed her hair behind them to show them off. This was the kind of information I was looking for. Not only the who made them, but was there a story behind the doll. This book covers the major manufactor's in Europe and is a great reference source not only for the China, Parian and Bonnet Heads lovers, but also for any doll lover. I highly recommend this book.Read full review
