Wow! I pretty much dug their last album, although I found it to be a bit too noisy / sonic at times. This time though they really nail it. This is just a solid rock album, but plenty of blues based rythms thrown in. The first track is one of the best, they start it out with a pretty rough chorus that left me thinking .. ok great they decided to step up the sonic wall that I hated in the last album .. but then of the of blue a head boppin , toe tappin blues rythm enters and the rest is just great great music. I have to say that this is the album that the Rolling Stones of 1969 would record today .. if well they were still around as the Rolling Stones of 1969. I am not sure how they would do this but ...... actually I have no idea where I am going with this ... suffice it to say this is a very good blues rock album. This seems to be a growing trend in rock music today and I really like it. All in all this is a safe buy Recommended If You: Like The White Stripes Would rather pass on listening to the radio Are tired of over produced / super packaged crap Not Recommended If You: Love Creed!! Tune in very weekend for Kasey CasemRead full review
If you're looking for that one BRMC album with songs you've heard here and there - whether on satellite or terrestrial radio - and you can't remember the title of the song you heard, chances are it's on this album. I believe this album defines BRMC. However be careful - if this cd is used chances are you may not be able to upload into your iTunes library because they are coded and only allow so much of that. This was my experience downloading the used Howl cd on eBay. I was unsuccessful at uploading it which really sucks. NEVER have I experienced that before.
The problem with Howl is that it gets stuck in a rut and can't figure out how to dig it's way out. This is a decent solid album but not quirky or diverse enough for my taste. The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are at their best when they sound like The White Stripes but they hardly ever get that funky. On the bright side, it's as good as any Soul Asylum album (and reminds me quite a bit of them too). I like this...but I don't like it a lot. 3 Stars.
