One of my good friends recommended this game to me, since I'm a big fan of space-games and intergalactic wars and aliens! And what a recommendation it was! This game, although a little old now, is absolutely sweet! The amount of modifications out there for it is ridicules! You can even add Star Trek ships to this game and use them in your fleet to bash the enemy! The 3D space control is nice and smooth, although a little hard to get used to in the beginning, but it definitely adds another dimension to strategy games. In the game itself, it's nice that you can actually hide the controls once you memorize all the keyboard shortcuts, the online play is really nice, and the graphics are acceptable for its age. The mods for this game are still being developed, so even though it's a little old its still alive. It would be nice to have Homeworld 3! The campaign so far seems to be fun, but when you buy a game like this you should be looking more towards the online game-play, and that's exactly why I bought it, so I can play with my friend and kick some butt! The only thing that I don't like about the game so far is the fact that you cannot choose a custom screen resolution. for example if i connect it to a 720P HD screen it will not allow me to have a 1360 X 768 resolution. You can only have 4:3, so you either have to stretch it with your screen settings, or just play with black spaces on the sides of your screen. But, again, I guess that's just because the game was released before all this HD craziness. If you're a space-war person, this game is a must-add to your collection! The ships are cool, the weapons are explosive, and the leasers are hot! The additions to this game are endless basically, and the online game-play is addictive! And, you do not need a massive gaming rig to play it! Even with all settings to the max.Read full review
This game while being eight or nine years old plays as fresh now as it did then. It has all of the classic RTS elements but makes things very interesting in each mission. This game will make you think, and can be very frustrating, until you figure out what to do. This is where it shines: making you think it is impossible to survive, punishing severely your mistakes and losses. But once you achieve success, or figure out the path to success, you feel as though you have had an epiphany. But for the casual player the game can be tedious and boring. Some of it is very long (one mission to complete all of it takes about ten hours) and sometimes the action is VERY slow. But all in all it is an excellent game with an impressive set of checks-and-balances, and rewarding in the end.
The 1999 release of Sierra's Homeworld saw the birth of 3-D real-time strategy gaming. A wonderfully immersive storyline, beautiful ships, and a haunting soundtrack make this one of my favorite games of all time. I recently purchased a copy again and the great thing is it still works with Win7!!! The best part is that having an epic space battle no longer taxes my computer's abilities. On the down side, there are only two playable races and each goes through the exact same storyline vs the other, and by that I mean they switch places. Also, the between mission videos look to be hand-drawn animations which may bother some players. I would recommend this game to anyone who loves the Sci-Fi or strategy genres. In fact, I've already told a few I'm going to make them borrow it after I'm done.Read full review
A true classic Space RTS. I played this when it originally arrived on the shelves in 1999 (at the age of 12), and 14 years later I'm still addicted to this game. I'm able to play it on Windows 7 with no issues other than screen resolution (I have black sidebars as my screen is 1366x768 & resolutions do not exceed 1024x768 - Likely fixed easily with a third party patch - there are plenty around for Homeworld & Homeworld 2). Imagine a much more personal 'Eve Online' experience or being just one Mothership in Sins of a Solar Empire, immersed in a battlefield that stretches in all directions but able to direct each unit individually - That's what Homeworld is to me. A true classic
I remember playing the demo for this game which I downloaded online over and over. After that, I HAD to have it. I had to see what happened to the Khar Selim. Sure enough, I was not disappointed. The ability to "Pirate" enemy ships is a lot of fun and very advantageous, the combat options are wide open and all depend on how you want to run your fleet, they also give you resource building options. The music is very soothing and appropriate, the detail, even for the game's age is awesome, the voice acting is good, and the 3-D graphics are great. The dorwnside... well nothing is perfect right? Some of the details surrounding the ships (That damn drone frigate) can put a bit of a hamper on your processor, depending on your system, but it's barely a problem. Anyone who likes strategy and/or space combat will LOVE this game!!Read full review
