Not one of Woody's best movies here but very funny all the same. The movie drags in parts but the excellent cast and characters keeps you entertained all the same. The movie is about a onetime famous high demand director that finds it hard to obtain work due to his reputation and history of being difficult to work with. He lands a job as a director on a new high budget movie, thanks to his ex-wife, and this could be his comeback. Unfortunately he loses his eyesight due to hysterical blindness (psychosomatic blindness) and has to direct the movie blind while pretending to everyone that he can still see. Confused? You won’t be after watching this slap stick comedy, no deep thinking required here.
Let me begin by stating for the record that I have seen about 30 of the roughly 40 films that Woody Allen made, so I guess you could say that I am a dyed-in-the-wool Woody Allen fan from way back. I have always been of the opinion that "Annie Hall" was the best film Allen ever made, until I saw "Hollywood Endings". Annie Hall is not about Allen, it's about Annie Hall. I believe that one of the reasons why Allen married Mia Farrow was because she could mimic the Annie Hall character (most notably in "Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy"). Anyway, unlike Annie Hall, Hollywood Endings is NOT about the leading lady. It is ALL about Allen. Everything that we love about Allen: 01) the aging neurosis 02) the older man with the younger woman 03) the closet hypochondriac 04) the perennial New York vs. Hollywood debate, is all here. The film opens smack dab in the middle of a heated debate between the top studio officials, which grabs the viewer's attention from the get-go and then proceeds to draw the viewer deeper and deeper into the story. The screenplay keeps moving - it is very progressive - the viewer is required to stay engaged the entire time, or you might miss something. The film is a classic Hollywood-type screenplay. In a nutshell, Allen's character is out-manned, out-gunned, and out-maneuvered. We the audience are convinced that there is no way that Allen can ever talk his way out of his predicament. In short, he is toast. And then, true to his word, Allen delivers a surprise Hollywood Ending to the story, and everything is right with the world. Curiously, the film did not do particularly well at the box office, was poo-poo'ed by the critics, and did not make a huge dent in video rentals and sales. Still, most people regard Allen's funniest work as: 01) Annie Hall 02) Manhattan 03) Play It Again, Sam. In this reviewer's humble opinion, Woody Allen's film Hollywood Endings is better than all three of those films combined.Read full review
