I found the name of this book scratched on the back of a sales catalog...it was among a stack of stuff to be cleaned off the coffee table, which is what I was doing when I found it. I have no idea where I received it...or why I felt compelled to write it down. I looked it up, read a few reviews and thought "oh yeah, I need this one." This book has been a delightful experience. I haven't finished it, but I've already ordered the sequel Mountains of Spices. It can be read on any level, from enchantingly light, tripping along like a bubbling brook or tenderly deep and insightful. I've read the Bible through in several translations and this story never contradicts or misrepresents it, but instead, it gives us understanding when the emotions we struggle with become complicated, confusing, difficult or vague. Often we have no idea what we're actually fighting against, but we understand we're not living the way we'd like to. This book gives us a tangible way to recognize the sacrifices we need to make of our own wills, a clear naming of our enemies and beautiful applications for scriptures we tend to recite instead of embrace. I have never understood what good friends Sorrow and Suffering are! This book has helped me to help identify the good from the bad, has made the journey clearer, a journey I chose to make many years ago. I believe a child of 10 could read this and then continue to read it once a year and that child would be leaps and bounds ahead of the game as the deeper studies and work that are necessary to truly reach High Places begin later in life. I think this is an amazing book, and one everyone should read WHEN the desire of their heart is High Places, or a close and personal relationship with the Lord. If that isn't the desire of their hearts, this will either change their mind (or heart), or seem like drivel. I only wish when I call for the Shepherd for help, He truly could appear and spend time with me with skin on! Other than that, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this book! Whether the first reading is at 10 or 50 or whenever, it is charming and full of truths. We can abandon ourselves to the child in all of us and enjoy the journey, learning without realizing we are holding amazing new insights in the palm of our hand.Read full review
this story is an allegory about our journey following Jesus. It addresses the reality of pain, sorrow, trials and suffering that accompany the fulfillment of the good shepards promises. Beautifully written, the book needs to be read more than once to grasp the depth of a relationship with God. The author gets right to the heart of the fears that plague us all and then reminds us of the victory we can rightfully claim as followers. Would be a great gift to: a new christian or an 'old' one who has 'forgotten' the true meaning of living for Jesus!
I love this book. This is the first book I read as a Christian, it helped me so much. I could so relate to poor little much afraid 😊 I have bought this book for friends, who have also said it has helped them in their walk with God, and also just in life. Highly recommended!

This is an awesome story so true to life I couldn't put it down. I kept trying to read slower so I wouldn't have to come to the end, but I kept reading faster because I was so excited to see my own heartaches and heartbreaks, and my own worries, doubts, and fears being transformed into expressions of praise and thanksgiving. Hannah Hurnard is a magnificent writer who most definitely experienced "high places" in her own life as she came to know the Lord Jesus Christ. And she has shared her expertise in a beautiful allegory that is truly inspiring. I know I will be reading it over and over again and look forward to discovering new truths each time.
It is in good quality and is such a wonderful story of love, perseverance, strength and transformation. It really shaped my faith and has affected my life. Thank you!
