If you have ever read a single chapter of a Neil Gaiman book, then you would know in advance to read Coraline yourself before reading it to your children. You could say that this book is Alice in Wonderland meets....well.....your worst nightmare (talking cat and all). His imagery is enough to give any adult chills, but keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what else is up this author's sleeve. Course, it is all up to the reader I guess. If you are into reading your children stories about imaginary, doll-like family members, then this book is straight up your alley!! In short, this book is a great introduction into the world of horror.
I agree that this book is not to be read by younglins. I have ordered for my 12 year old who loves mythology and horror stories. She can handle it. This book in particular is a very good read. The story is original, well thought out, and author puts together the fantasy world with the realistic world unlike any other story I have read. Creepy to say the least but very entertaining!
Good book for children that are starting out reading, it is a little scary though, maybe for an older kiddo but my 6 year old loves it!

Amazing novel my son and I are enjoying this winter. It’s his very first chapter book and we are having so much fun comparing the book to the film!
