This 1979 love story set in London during World War II poses more than one question. Harrison Ford is David Halloran, an American flyer who falls for an English nurse, Margaret Sellinger played by Lesley Anne Down. The main problem is that Margaret is married to a wonderful, older man, Paul Sellinger played by Christopher Plummer. In an Anna Karenina type marriage, Margaret has a daughter with Paul, but she is bored. Paul is distracted because he is an expert spy who has trained 2 previous spies who were caught and killed while working in Germany. The story heats up when Captain Halloran and Paul end up on a mission to Germany to steal some plans. When their plane crashes, they must work together to complete the mission and return safely to England. Neither knows about the other's relationship to Margaret. Will they find out? This movie has lots of emotion, action, and a moving soundtrack. It is also beautifully photographed. Showcasing Harrison Ford when he began his career, the movie was originally supposed to star Kris Kristofferson, who backed out. Sarah Miles was to play Margaret and was replaced by Lesley Anne Down, who now appears daily on the soap opera, "The Bold and the Beautiful." This movie was not well received by critics in 1979, but it is a favorite now because of its good story with action. Especially with the success of Harrison Ford, it is fun to see him as a young actor before he became famous.Read full review
In London during the WW2 Blitz bombing, Harrison Ford's character, an American pilot, meets and falls in love with a British woman. Turns out she is married to a British spy who later crosses paths with Ford during an adventureous mission. This movie offers the chance to see Harrison Ford early in his career in a role apart from Han Solo in Star Wars. In this movie, Ford's romantic appeal, coupled with a terrific action role, gives fans an early glimpse of his later action/adverture persona. This movie is a must-see for Harrison Ford fans.
Set in WWII London in the 1940's, Harrison Ford is an American pilot David Halloran who falls in love with an English nurse Margaret Sellenger (Leslie Anne Down). He doesn't know that she is married, and they start having a very tender affair. Her husband is Paul Sellinger (Christopher Plummer), a British agent/spy, who is rather dull and totally consumed by his work. Two spies that he personally recruited and trained were both caught and murdered in Germany. In his persuance of his mission he has wound up ignoring both her and their young daughter. Inevitably, Ford and her husband's paths cross as they are thrown together on a secret mission of vital importance behind enemy lines in occupied France. When their plane is shot down, Margaret is faced with the double tragedy of having both of the men that she loves go missing at the same time, and presumed dead. In the midst of danger, Ford then realizes that the agent is his lover's husband. Luckily surviving, Ford must now do what is right, and he walks away. This really is a very good movie.Read full review
I thought this was one of Harrison Ford's better movies outside of the Indiana Jones series. A love affair with a beautiful nurse in World War II England complicated by a dangerous mission with an undercover spy into German territory who turns out to be the woman's husband. Now the hero Ford must save the man she's married to and turn his back on his blooming love affair or should he let him die and win the woman? It was an exciting movie for me, enjoyed it very much and especially recommend it to Harrison Ford fans, Christopher Plummer is the lackluster, dull husband who becomes a hero for England and his wife, played by Lesley-Ann Down.
Graet music score....great early acting for the cast
