I had stopped reading novels in the fantasy genre some time ago. Eventhough I am an avid reader, the fantasies that have come out in recent years, to me, have been unable to capture my intrest. I stumbled across The Elvenbane by accident, and after reading just the first few pages, I was enthralled. Lackey and Norton have taken the concept of elves, dragons, and humans to a whole new level in this epic novel (which is the first of four). The story line is wonderful, and keeps the reader turning the pages until the very end. The Elvenbane tells of the beginning of one half-elf (or half-blood, as Lackey and Norton call it), Lashana, from her unfortunate birth, through her child hood among the dragons, and on to her early womanhood after having been exiled from those that had raised her from birth. With extradionary magical powers, and the strength to lead others, Shana begins to turn the tide in favor of the outcasts of society in her world, and bring justice to the innocents who need it most. This was a truly captivating read, and I recommend it to anyone who either already loves the Fantasy genre, or is looking to broden their horizons and give it a try.Read full review
This was a rather random purchase for me. It sounded interesting so I thought I should give it a try (got a good deal). I ended up really liking it! Perhaps a bit slow in the beginning but it picked up rather well. I really couldn't put it down, and I blew through it in about two days. I now would like to read the other two books on the series, but it's perfectly fine as a stand-alone novel. If you like fantasy at all and can find a good deal, then by all means give it a try.
I absolutely loved this book. It is one of my favorites. I bought it because I have read it before and have been searching for my own copy. I plan to read the entire series again. I actually think i liked Elvenbane best out of the three halfblood chronicles.
