In terms of interfacing an PATA device (such as an IDE HDD, CD-ROM or DVD drive) to a SATA port on your motherboard, it works as advertised and is the only mode I tested. It's supposed to work the other way around too, but I've not tested this. Be aware in my use case, the PATA device you are connecting to this converter must be set to Master. Otherwise your motherboard BIOS will not detect the device. This is the correct behavior, but it may end up being a trap for new players. Additionally, it is easy to be off by one or more pins when connecting your device to the PATA connector, so play particular close attention to this. Just in case you are wondering, this was a Linux computer I was interfacing PATA IDE drives to the computers SATA port. This device should be transparent to any operating system, but I mention this in case someone considering this for their Linux computer may not be absolutely sure if it is. There were a few spots on the PATA connector that looked to have been inadequately soldered to the PCB, So I had to re-solder them. Frankly, this is to be expected for cheap Chinese products, as Quality Assurance to Chinese fabs seems to be a complex abstraction delegated exclusively as a mental exercise only. So be forewarned.Read full review

This simple device allows you to use a PATA drive on a SATA only PC, and vice versa. New motherboards don't have 80-pin PATA anymore, but now you don't have to throw away the drive or buy a new one. Just connect this little device in between the SATA port on your board(you may need a longer cable, provided one was too short for me) and the connector on the back of your drive, connect the power wire to it and the drive, turn on PC, and it should recognize the new drive(check file explorer).

I needed an adapter to connect my older PATA/IDE 3.5" hard drive to a motherboard that only had SATA connectors. This worked perfectly. I will note that the 40-pin connector that connects to the PATA/IDE interface does not have the extra plastic on each end that a typical IDE cable has, so the connection is not snug like a cable. You must be careful to line up the pins correctly, but for the price and functionality, it's hard to beat.
