Necronomicon is one of the few movies to successfully follow the sheer eeriness of Lovecraft's stories. Part of the reason Lovecraft's stories manage to give me goosebumps (and some very strange nightmares) is because he never tried to go in depth and explain why things happened. There's never a motive for why his creatures, demons, or "great old ones" do what they do, and thats what makes it so terrifying. You can't reason with a creature when you don't know what it wants or why its doing something. This is exactly how Necronomicon was filmed. Other Lovecraft movies tend to lose that sheer blind terror because they always try to explain things or go in depth on characters and monster that you only get a glimpse of in the story, but Necronomicon has managed to retain that feeling of nameless horror. Necronomicon is a true masterpiece of terror. A friend of mine who was watching it with me had to leave the room, she couldn't take it, and she's a big horror movie fanatic! If you're a huge fan of H. P. Lovecraft's films I highly reccomend getting Necronomicon: Book of the Dead. You will not regret it!Read full review
Directed by Brian Yuzna, Christophe Gans, and Shsuke Kaneko This movie is based on H.P. Lovecraft's writings. It includes 3 short stories devoted to the deadly "book of the dead". When Lovecraft (Jeffrey Combs) manages to "borrow" the book out of a massively guarded library, he finds himself deeply in its passages, as he sets out to record the information. In the first story a man who inherits an old motel gets WAY more than he bargains for when he discovers demons are living in the basement. In the second story a reporter searches for a doctor who is said to have found the path to immortality. It inevitably turns out that he's in over his head as well. The last story is based around a bad ass cop who sets out into a strange set of catacombs in order to find her partner. Unknowingly there is an infamous serial killer living in the depths. With a wonderful cast featuring - Bruce Payne, Belinda Bauer, Bess Meyer, Juan Fernández, Brian Yuzna, Richard Lynch, Jeffrey Combs, Tony AzitoRead full review
This item has become a bit of a cult favorite that is currently hard to find. I enjoyed it. The anthology-based production was held together at the beginning and end by the great Jeffrey Combs. Each story was fairly scary and the acting was good throughout. The Lovecraftian creatures and special effects were effective as well.
