Tragic but true story of the death of Country/Rock star Gram Parsons. His talent was much larger than he was when he died. It took some time for the rest of the world truly recognized his accomplishments. Unfortunately he died too young, from drugs and alcohol. His manager and best friend Phil Kaufman (Johnny Knoxville), made a promise to Gram that if he died he would not let them stick him in a grave in New Orleans, but that he would take his body out to Joshua Tree, Ca. Here, he would "set him free" by burning him and spreading his ashes to the wind. This is the story of what happened. Being chased by Gram's ex-girlfriend who needs the body to obtain a death certificate so that she can clean out his bank account, Gram's father, and the police. Kaufman is just trying to get his friend Gram to Joshua Tree to set him free.Read full review
I enjoyed this movie because, an excellent cast, good story line and independent-type productions like this one tend to portray real human emotions and actual life experiences. Big studio pix like Avatar and Harry Potter are nothing more than money hogs which have absolutely no redeeming value, social or otherwise. This movie actually depicted important human qualities like friendship and loyalty. I recommend this picture to anyone who is still alive from the neck up.
I wanted this movie as it's a true story about Gram Parsons who was a country-rock music legend. It had some silly parts, almost unbelievable, but did tell the story I know to be true. Gram Parsons was a musician who played/sang with an old friend of mine. Would love to have had more of Gram's singing in the movie. Maybe someone else could make a movie sometime about his life. This one was just about his death.
A very fun to watch movie. Johnny Knoxville knocks it out of the park as Phil Kaufman.
