Global Change Ser.: Biodiversity : Can We Balance Economic Expansion and Resource Conservation by Brad Williamson, Sara Krauskopf, Irwin Slesnick, Linda Wygonda and Margaret Edwards (1997, Trade Paperback, Teacher's edition)
This book uses Costa Rica as a case study because the country's tropical forests contain four percent of Earth's total biological species diversity. Biodiversity's activities and readings help students explore efforts to balance economic expansion with resource conservation. This resource has activities to explore local biodiversity and true-to-life role-playing scenarios, so students can apply what they have learned. Biodiversity is one of four books in NSTA Press's Global Environmental Change series, a joint project of NSTA Press and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The other books in the series are Deforestation, Carrying Capacity, and Introduced Species. We don't have to go to a tropical forest to learn about biodiversity. We can study it in an ecosystem on Earth: the seashore, a forest floor, swamp mud, even a pinecone. Our challenge is to observe and idenfity all the organisms that live together in an ecosystem. Biodiversity is one of those natural phenomena that should be experienced directly to be understood and appreciated.
