I required a trail type portable GPS with altitude functions. Much of the flora and fauna here is highly dependant upon altitude. I also liked the idea of implementing a camera....like we all need is another device with a camera but the 550 marks the photos as a waypoint. The camera is a power monger and Garmin does not recommend the use of alkaline batteries if the camera is to be used. That causes some difficulty since it can be difficult to find a power source for the rechargable batteries. But it allows me to return to interesting sites without entering a lot of data. I can return to check the progress of various Orchids and other interesting plants by simply selecting the photo. Certain geological formations can be selected and returned to at a later date. I am very pleased with the sensitivity of the device. Once it locks to a satellite it seems to hold. I can travel through heavy rainforest and the signal remains solid. Garmin makes solid devices that are dust and water repellent and can take some pretty good physical abuse that happens on the trail. Availability of topo maps for Peru as well as the rest of South America would be a major plus. I have yet to apply the gathered data to produce useable maps so cannot say much about it. I do not require road maps since it is designed for trail and not auto traveling. The touchscreen is convenient and brightness is good. I have not used the compass features in serious cross country travel but have believe it to be reliable. There are a lot of good GPS receivers but Garmin is my choice from past experience with other GPS units. It would be difficult to make a poor choice with the Garmin family of hand held units.Read full review
Awesome GPS, Works great, has numerous user friendly features, and is extremely accurate and easy to use. I installed the Hunt Montana SD card with all the land & property owner data on it so I could readily see where I am at while hunting no matter how far into the hills I hike, and know that I am on land I have permission to hunt on. Great unit, easy to see in bright sunlight,as with anything electronic the batteries never seem to last long enough, but Ni-cads do last a long time and are rechargeable.
I bought my Garmin Oregon 550 to replace an older Garmin eTrex Vista C that I lost on a hunting trip last fall. I selected it because of its touch screen controls and expandable memory. I have not been disappointed. The Oregon has proved to be far more sensitive than my Etrex was, and its touch screen is far easier to manipulate than the joy stick on my former unit. I like the camera feature which allows me to photograph places that interest me and record their positions, so I can return to them again. However, in finding those places, I miss the proximity feature that my old Etrex had, and wish that this one had it, too. Nevertheless, I am happy with my Oregon 550, and would recommend it to my friends.
Bought this unit to keep track of snowshoe hikes, bike rides,as well as hunting and scouting information. It has performed superbly this past winter. I have only scatched the surface of this units capabilities. Very easy to learn and user friendly. The touch screen is responsive but a little dark in bright sun light. It aquires satellite fixes in seconds. Battery life has been on par with Garmin's claims though I have only used lithiums, not the NMHi's that came with. So far I am very satisfied with this purchase.
I purchased this unit primarily for snowmobiling.I like the ease of usage and has some really nice features.I would personally like to see it have a larger screen, but in no way does this take anything away from this gps unit.I have yet to put it through a real world test so I cant elaborate on this or the longivity of this product seeing how I just bought it,but this does seem to be a pretty rugid, user friendly gps with a lot of nice features and being able to purchase a micro sd card with snowmobile trails makes this even better for me!
