I have had one of these for years. The only down side is the the battery, it just is not enough to use it for more than a couple or few hours. Use it with the car kit and it is great. The OEM car kit has a speaker built in to it that is great (the units tiny speaker can not compete really with road noise. once in awhile it may freeze and you have to re-set it; other than that the only time I have ever had a problem it turned out to be the SD card and not the 3600. I have logged 1000's of miles on "Betty" and she has been a wonderful companion for someone like myself who has anxiety when traveling in unknown locations. Every time I see the latest and greatest GPS units come to market I debate whether I should upgrade, but the newer models just dont appeal to me like the 3600. The way that the PDA's address book links up with the units GPS functions is absolutely fantastic; click on a entry in the address book and click the icon to route you to it from where ever you are. It slips easily into your shirt or suit pocket when you are done It is a shame that Garmin no longer supports the unit; if they ever stop making maps for it I will be sad indeed. In the mean time I am looking to get a spare - I love it that much. BTW, you can find aftermarket batteries, even longer lasting ones, to replace the original. And if you do buy aone from someone - make sure that it has the original unlock codes that came with it when it was first set up, and that the original owner is willing to email Garmin to let them know it is changing owneres.Read full review
The Garmin iQue 3600 functions as both a PDA and a GPS and this combined function was the primary reason for selecting this unit back in 2004. There are functions to keep phone lists with addresses, hunting and fishing times, memos, documents, phases of the sun and moon, a date book and several others including a MP3 player capability and the ability to password protect your data. Addresses you enter can be mapped to their location on the GPS map making it easy to navigate to specific locations not included in the millions of points of interest identified in the software. The GPS, however, is only as good as the maps that you get for it. The original maps by Navteq had numerous serious errors and subsequent versions of the maps have not corrected many of those errors. If the user uses their head, realizes that it does have errors and does not blindly follow everything the unit tells you to, it is a useful tool. However, if the user does not use their head it can cause you to drive into the spillway of a flood control dam. That could ruin your whole day. The purchaser must be aware that some of the units have a serious flaw in that they randomly lock up and require resetting to return to a functioning mode. This can occur as frequently as every 15 minutes. This flaw can be dangerous if a reset attempt is made while operating a motor vehicle. I had to send my originally purchased unit back to Garmin for warranty repair and had to send it back again for warranty replacement before I owned one that worked correctly. When the unit works as designed, it is a great tool. If mapping updates are desired, they have to be purchased separately, if you can find them, and they cost around a C-note. Each update has to have an update code and an unlock code. Once the codes are entered, they are linked back to Garmin and cross-referenced to the serial number, Unit ID, Unlock certificate and Unlock Code. The mapping software cannot be loaded onto a different unit without obtaining an additional Unlock certificate and Unlock Code for an additional cost.Read full review
The iQue 3600 combines a Palm Operating system with a GPS. It can be used handheld but an powered garmin auto cradle is recommended since battery life is limited with the GPS turned on. The maps are straight forward. The ability to route to any address in your Address listings is awesome. I cannot imagine why anyone would buy an iPod when you can use this with additional software to do everything an ipod will do (mp3 player, pictures, and video) plus anything a Palm Pilot will do and GPS. Note: separate software necessary to view pictures and video. Added 3/6/08 It took almost a month to get the previous owner (a cousin of the seller) to release the regisration on the serial number so I could register it. All Garmin Products with Serial Number need to be released by the previous owner. A Garmin Theft prevention solution. Since it can work in my favor, it's good.Read full review
This is my third one. One thing I might mention, Be sure the "brand new unit has not been registered already. The last "Brand New, Never been used" one I bought on ebay had "already been registered", and it was impossible to register it with Garmin. I guess Garmin customer service does not support this model any more any way, so it does not matter much as long as you do not want to upgrade maps. If you use the old map program that came with it, it works very well, and has many good features that other units do not have. Too bad Garmin does not make this model anymore!
I mistakenly bought this product without software and without owner's password and registration information. Garmin has discontinued this product which makes it harder. The date book works fine but there is no map program loaded so the GPS is uselell. I am hoping the problem can be solved by taking it to a Garmin service center but the closest one is over one hundred miles but I will be going that way next week. Another problem is the screen. It is almost invisable except in low light and it frequently fades and you have to brighten it manually. This may not be normal so I will check with Garmin. Because so meny smart phones have these features available, I don't think I would buy one of these again.
