My goal was to connect multiple devices up to one computer monitor. This includes computers and my television control box. This 5 port switcher filled the bill. Every thing that I've hooked up to the device has worked to my expectation (video and audio) Hook up was easy, ran a HDMI cable form the switcher's output port to the monitor. I then connected my laptop to an input port and the computer screen displayed on the monitor. I then tested the laptop into each of the 5 input port and everyone worked fine. As I plugged the laptop into a different input port the switch automatically switched to that input port. I then worked on the remote. You have to pull a piece of plastic out of the remote that insulates the battery during shipping. I plugged the inferred sensor into the switch and tried selecting another input - nothing happened (I expected to see the input indicator on the switch move to the selected input). Turns out that the remote will not switch to an input port that isn't connected and active. Once I connected a second device to the switcher, the remote would switch between the two inputs. I also found out that while I was watching television and I rebooted my laptop, the switcher keep me connected to the television input until the laptop rebooted and then automatically switched the input to the laptop. I believe this falls under the feature "Automatically switch to the device that is powered on first", but should read "Automatically switches to a device which powers on." I would prefer this not to happen and consider this a nuisance item - but depending upon your application it may be how you want the switcher to work (I can see both sides). The drawbacks to this is the number and size of HDMI cables going to one location. The shortest HDMI cables are typically 3 feet (1M) and are fairly thick. In my application, I have three devices really close together (less then 18 inches from the monitor) and this causes excess cable in the area which is somewhat difficult to manage. I have some thin HDMI cables on my main television and hope to get some more for this switch. In the mean time, I get to view the current cables which have a mind of their own. All in all, I would rate this switcher a 4.5 out of 5, but I can only use integer stars. Works well, but the automatic switching to devices bring up power drops my rating by 0.5. I left my rating at 5 because one could say that the switching function is working as advertised.Read full review

It will need a power source to work properly. I don't know about the other reviews but I tried the PS3, Onkyo stereo receiver, a preamp, and bluray player with all the same results. It starts to work but gives out intermittently every 15 seconds and comes back on after a second or two. And I thought I was getting a good deal...

Easy to use. Only downside is the remote sensor. Even if you have a straight line of sight from the side, it won't work until remote is directly in front of IR sensor. Other than that, the amount of ports is great, and functionality is on point.

This device is a great way to expand the number of HDMI ports on your TV. It's inexpensive and it works. The unit gets it's power from HDMI devices, so it doesn't appear that the external power source is needed, but unit comes with cable to attach to a USB power source. Some things that I've noticed: The IR control to switch ports seems to take a long time to work. Also connections are on the long surfaces of the switch so if you want the LED's which show channel selection to show from the front of your TV, you will see the HDMI wires. (This is no big deal if you don't need to see the indicators.)

For an under $10 drive-out price, this is a great little switcher. With output to my TV, the moment I plugged that in, the box received all the power it has needed. I started with 3 inputs and the box correctly permitted only active input selections, jumping from 1 to 3 to 5 in my case. The remote IR sensor was handy and allowed the switch to be mounted properly behind my equipment, otherwise out of IR view. The IR remote is cheap but what would you expect - and it works well enough. I easily moved its functions to my master remote as most will do anyway. I'd paid almost $50 for a ZettaGuard 4 port switch, which constantly dropped audio and would switch inputs from 1080p to 480i for no reason... bye bye and good riddance. This one has been a pleasure so far.
