This vintage tube is bringing the past to the future. The tone of this tube is well balanced and very musical. More highs and lows then a RCA long black plates but not smooth and buttery, more open and airy, never harsh, but not muddy. This tube gives you what you give it, it doesn't mute dynamics or overly color the tone of pedals and guitars. In v1 one these characteristics are ever present, but my tube is a little micro-phonic, hence the 4 star, this is more of a 4.5 or higher. I currently am using this as a PI in a fender Excelsior, along with black plate GE 6v6s, a RCA black plate 5751 mil spec in v1 and a 12" Heppner smooth cone alnico 1950s to 1960s speaker. The GE in my application clearly out performs all reproduction tubes I previously used a Mullard 12ax7 Repro in the v2 phase inverter spot and it sucks in comparison to the GE. The GE sounds bigger, less gritty and more musical. The GE in v1 of my Egnater was shockingly good, beating the RCA long plate black plate with its clarity but I wanted gobs of sustain and went another route. GE 12ax7's are great tubes that are affordable, for now and I will buy more.Read full review
I did rate this tube as excellent. I found it to be... but it is all in the "Ear of the Beholder", of course. The preamp I was using had a MESA tube in it. I don't know it's age but it sounded just fine with nice lows and nice even highs. I decided to try a new tube just because I read that you should never keep the crumby tube that this unit originally comes with.... I didn't know the MESA was in there until I opened it up to exchange it with this new GE Hammond... like I said the MESA was very nice and the previous owner must have put the MESA in. When I did though, I found the Hammond to have more mids to my ear and the gain was pretty significant. Just goes to prove though that the tube makes a difference. If you are looking for gain and mids this tube will work out fine for you...only been in a week so I can't speak to it's longevity...Read full review

Guitar amp duty is my thing. This Westinghouse 12ax7 is made by Matshushita in Japan on the british Mullard equipment. This tube is different sounding as the high notes wail and cry with great bass thats tight and when pushed breaks up nice ! The original Mullard are bass heavy with resessed highs and when pushed can get to much bass and lacks highs but will breakup really good !
I bought this gem to replace the crappy chinese-made one that came in my mic/instrument preamp, and the difference in the warmth and fullness of the tone is astonishing! Buy a real vintage tube. It's the only way to get that real vintage tone!
