I bought an edition of this book back in 1970. It was very much over my head and mostly its value to me was when I rode the "EL" train in Chicago with my army jacket, beret and long scarf and would hold the book high enough so my fellow passengers could read the title and therby, know I was reading some deep stuff! Ha ha. Now I am curious to know what was actually in that book that I had missed. I am into Light & Sound meditation now for 38 years and find the classic terminology from the Hindu and Tibetan languages relevant and valuable to my ongoing studies. This book is a well written, though ponderous text reviewing the core of the Tibetan Mystical experience and the application of the sacred Mantra, "OM MANI PADME HUM". has enormous value if one has the patience and fortitude to get through the chapters of this core text by one of the more famous mystical authors of this type of religious experiance. An interesting man, Anagarika Govinda was the name taken by a man who was NOT Tibetan, but of German descent. He brings out the secret rituals of the Kargyaputa sect of Tibetan-Buddhism. With excellent photo plates of Buddist sculptures of deities, he explains the value of these as meditative tools to the inner experience. In essence he de-mystifies the occult use of these as usefull landmarks on the inward journey. What makes it as previously mentioned a bit tedious is that he insited on strict use and explanation of the comparative Hindu-Sanskrit-Tibetan words. This makes this book a text for serious study and reference over and above just a personal story and one mans journey, which it also certainly is as well!! Very cool, "deep" stuff indeed !Read full review
