I am beyond impressed w/the quality of this machine and the visible care that went into the overall refurb! This is my 3rd refurb-purchase and my MOST FAVORITE, thus far! Filter Queen’s are a true workhorse! These machines will literally last a lifetime! We bought our first of four machines, brand new, 20 years ago for close to $2k and it still runs like new! Worth every single penny! I personally like the older body styles of these machines, such as the brown, D33 that I own, along with this model 99 body style! I tell everyone I know about the reliability and durability of these machines at every chance I get!!! I brag about these machines all the time! Now, I am somewhat of a collector, but I use these machines regularly and have a FQ at-the-ready on every level of my home!!! I am proud to be an owner of several Filter Queens from over the last 40 years! Forget about Dyson - this machine is worth its weight in gold! You will never, ever regret the purchase of a Filter Queen, new or used!Read full review

A lot of people are going to be unhappy about this review here are the facts. I bought one of these for a vacuum for a little workshop type room, as soon as I opened the box it smelled so bad I couldn’t use it. I bought 2 others and found the same problems, so as far as a used unit, they can and probably will smell pretty bad. I cleaned all 3 and still have some smell from them. (They smell in general, I’m not talking about when I power them on, etc, I mean as they sit they have a general odor even after cleaning them thoroughly.) Now beyond that, as far as FQ compared to rainbow vacuums, I like rainbow vacuums alot better, I have bought 2 of them used for 50$ each and they don’t have the smell issue. I have a 150 pound dog and when using the rainbow it definitely doesn’t leave the dog smell around. I have a d3 and se unit. The water change that everyone complains about is not a big deal. I dump the water down the toilet and give it a rinse of clean water in the sink and dump it again, takes about a minute to change the water- no big deal. The rainbow doesn’t seem any noisier than the fq I think they are about the same. Now to the FQ vs. the miele vacuums, canister and uprights: I own 2 Miele vacuums, bought them both new, the Miele vacuums are great, they work beautifully, now as far as they go, they are the quietest of the bunch, the bags seal up nice and are high quality. But the upright miele does smell of dog after years of heavy use, and changing the hepa filter doesn’t fix it. At the end of the day, I really like Rainbow vacuums, I change my water between every room and there is no smell. I am allergic to dust and mold and haven’t had a problem with either. Always remember to dump and rinse the bowl on them, and let the sit and airdry, never store the vacuum on it. I have never seen any mildew or mold, I have seen some rust occasionally as I do metal machining and bring in metal flakes at times on my clothes. Other than that, I would buy A rainbow, rebuild it, and put it to use, you will thank you wallet later, as you won’t be changing expensive bags or filters. Oh and I don’t use the E series, I don’t have any experience with them, I think the filter is overkill, but maybe it’s great, I don’t know. I like the D and Se units. The earlier ones are ok too.Read full review

I bought this vacuum because I have pets that generate a lot of dust an fur, and wanted a vacuum with good filtration and a long life. I can't speak to the life of this product because I have not had it for long, but I've been very happy with the suction and filtering of the machine. My previous vacuum became very dusty at the joints after using it, meaning that it wasn't capturing all the dust it was sucking up and was putting it back in the air, but that hasn't been an issue with this one. I would feel confident in using it to dust the house. The tools that come with it are useful, particularly the bare floor and crevice attachments. The machine has two power settings, low and high, and so far I've only needed the low setting. The power head is light and seems to work well, and is easy to use to vacuum my stairs, and overall the machine is quieter than what I've used in the past. My only real complaint about it is that it's a bit heavy and awkward to haul up and down stairs (moving it around on a level surface isn't a problem because the wheels work well). I can see why some people who have reviewed it have mentioned buying a second machine for use on different levels of their houses. That's not an option for me, so I'll just stick with hauling it up and down and rest on the satisfaction of knowing my house is actually getting clean.Read full review
I own a number of Kirby vacuums ranging from the 505 (1945 model) to the diamond model with 2 speeds. We had rugs in all our houses up until about a year ago and I still don't think anything beats a Kirby with the new bags for cleaning rugs. But now we have all hardwood floors so I bought a canister that is more maneuverable than the Kirby. The Filter Queen rolls in any direction while the kirby just forward and back. I did not need the beater brush head and from what I have seen and played with the FQ beater is pretty poor when compared with some German ones or the Kirby. It just doesn't have the weight and because the hose is long it doesn't have the suction the Kirby does either. So I just bought the FQ canister, wrapped a couple layers of black tape around the Kirby hose (after removing the Kirby Attachment fitting) and jammed it in the FQ hole. Now I have a 9' hose that accepts Kirby tools, which I also find superior to any other. So what I have is A FQ majestic 360 set up for bare floors and dusting. It is great! There is no smell from the exhaust and the motor is also filtered. Very nice. It is like a Kirby with a new HEPA bag. But once the Kirby fills there is a slight odor from the dog hair (we have 4 that shed a lot) whereas the FQ has none. The Medipure charcoal filter does the trick. Without it there is a noticable odor comming from the filter queen. The seem to cost about $15 every 6 months from ebay. so compared to Kirby HEPA bags that is not too much. The Power is good and it does pick up the finest of dust and hold it in the canister. This means you need a shopcoat and mask when you dump it out... Do it outside on a windless day or the dust flys everywhere. I think the instructions say do it by inverting the canister into a plastic trash bag. I tried but found that when I closed the bag....dust everywhere, it is that fine. So this gets a 4. Great, probably worth 2 -300 just for the base unit. I tried the power head but didn't like it as well as a Kirby upright for carpet. But for dusting this is fantastic. I noticed powerless hoses on sale for the low $20' That may be a better idea than adapting the Kirby hose if the tools fit the other end.Read full review
Years ago, I had a Filter Queen vacuum which I found to be extremely good but I had to leave it behind due to a move. Really missed that unit for what it did and i decided to check Ebay for a replacment. Glad I did. These vacuums have excellent suction and air flow allowing quicker cleaning of the home. And, with their much above average filtering, they clean both the dirt from your home and the air in the home. I remember being truly shocked at what I would find in the dirt cannister when I emptied and the pleasant smell when using the machine. No weird smell comes from the vacuum when you are using it and you do notice a difference in the air quality with frequent use. They are very quiet in operation, much more so in the low speed mode. Possibly, this is the quietest vacuum I've ever experienced. The downside is that the vacuum is so quiet it makes the powerhead seem very noisy. The powerhead is probably no noisier than any other but, with the quietness of the main unit, it just seems to be noisier than expected. I'm not fond of the unusual way the attachments fit but they do stay firmly in place while in use. And, because of the unusual fit, aftermarket accessories not made specifically for Filter Queen will not fit without an adaptor (usually available at any vacuum store). But these attachments are very well made and last indefinately. As will the powerhead with only minor maintenance. I'd recommend all owners check the powerhead at least every six months for buildup inside and change the belt at least yearly. Not hard to do and makes for a longer lasting unit. I would like to try out the newer style powerhead and hose, tho. It looks like it would be easier to use. The filtering system in a Filter Queen is outstanding! No bags, foam filters or pleated filters. Just large cellulose cones which fit over the bottom of the main motor unit. Very effective - in fact, I've read in several places where this cone filter exceeds HEPA! Yes, the cones can be difficult to find locally - Ebay to the rescue! - but work so well the difficulty is minor. And, they are not expensive. Just remember to replace the small grey inside filter every six changes to keep the excellent filtering quality. Emptying the dirt cannister is very little different than emptying that of a modern bagless vacuum. Only larger and capable of holding much more. I remove the motor top and hose, take the cannister out to the garbage can, remove the filter cone and dump. I've been told by many old hands that a garbage bag can be placed over the top of the cannister to aid in dumping but it's never been a problem to me. What fascinates me is that this is a cyclonic bagless design - essentially similar to modern syles - but it came out in 1928 and still is better than most new styles. Overall, they are a great vacuum, terribly overpriced when new (but, worth it) so I recommend Ebay. They are built to last with tried and true engineering and will be very economical to use over the years. My vacuum shop tells me that they are very easy to work on should work be needed also.Read full review
