I have to admit I went into this book with pretty high expectations. While I'm not Moning's biggest fan, her McKeltar series always delivers an engaging heroine, hot alpha male hero, some interesting plot twists, and a decent plot that leaves me a satisfied reader when I'm finished. And many of the familiar Moning standbys were evident in Darkfever--at least on the surface. You had a spunky heroine in trouble, throw in a fair dosage of mystery, intrigue and paranormal threat, and a readable, engaging book should have been the result. Should have been. Instead I found the heroine pretty consistently exemplifying the "Too Stupid To Live" mentality, the putative hero....wasn't. Character growth and realization was pretty much absent because the characters were too busy being madly rushed from one perilous situation to another with no time for anything in between. Moning seemed to get quite caught up in describing each and every detail of every 'unseelie' the heroine encountered. For me, less is more. Menacing is okay. Evil is okay. But after awhile, the descriptions got downright cartoon-y. It wasn't an awful book. Moning is too talented an author for that. But it was disappointing. It also didn't land on my "keeper" shelf, nor even in my "resell" pile. Instead, it went right back out to a friend who wanted to read it, and I didn't want her to waste good money on it. It's not unreadable, but it's far from Moning at her best.Read full review

At first I didn't like the main character (Mac) but Mac sorta sinks into you as you read forward. I jsut felt at first the main character always has to be fair and light and sassy, a little generic but she becomes herself later in the book. It was pretty simple to read, the descriptions were good, nothing spectacular but not unformed. Moning sets up the plot well enough. I found the book evenly paced, a good length and towards the end it was decent and left a very interesting cliff hanger. I do plan to go on and read the rest of the series, so it is a recommended read :D
I have had this series recommended to me time and again, but put it off. Now that I have read this book I would like to thump myself for doing so. I did take one piece of advice which was get the whole series before you start because you will instantly wish to grab the next one. Yah, that happened to me. The characters, the plot, the word and world building were stupendous. Every little detail has meaning and the book kept me turning pages quickly whether it was to follow the action or something to do with the characters. Best Urban Fantasy series I have read.
excellent beginning book to a series that won't be completed till next year. if you like the twilight series, mortal instruments series, sookie series, anita blake, etc.. you will enjoy these books. moning has a great style of writing and you get attached to her characters.
