This just may be Donald Sutherland's best movie. He plays Mr. Faber, a British troop train dispatcher during early WWII in London. He is a German double agent and is discovered by his landlady whom he kills. He disappears back to Germany. Years later his mission is to return to England and photograph General Patton's invasion force of equipment and bring back the film and pictures to Hitler himself. Upon returning to England he very clandestinely sneaks into the area where Patton's force is and takes photographs of the equipment showing that it was all phony. When he returns to his hotel, he is greeted by another German agent with instructions to escape through Scotland, and meet a U-boat off Storm Island. The courier was followed and Sutherland must kill him and run. He has been recognized by a man who he knew years before and could identify him as a spy. He begins his trek toward Scotland. While there, he steals a fishing boat and is headed for Storm Island to signal the waiting U-boat. He gets caught in a terrible storm and is shipwrecked on Storm Island where he is taken in by a crippled sheep farmer and his wife and child. The sheep farmer is an ex-fighter pilot and is alcoholic. Since his accident he is bitter and resentful towards his wife. He's mad at the world and suspicious of this shipwrecked man. Faber rests for a while and when he wakes up tries to explain why he was out in such bad weather. The farmer's wife, Kate Milligan, is taken by Faber, and she is sexually attracted to him. Her husband is rude and suspects that Faber is not telling the truth. He goes off to his friends lighthouse about a mile away. Faber inquires if there is a radio and is told that Tom (Light house) had a radio. Faber and the farmer's wife have an affair. The next day Faber kills the farmer and tries to get to the radio to signal the U-boat. Finding her husband's body, she knows that something is dreadfully wrong. When Faber comes home and lies about her husband being drunk with Tom, she knows that Faber killed him. She tries to get to the radio to call for help, and finds Tom dead too. Faber catches up with her and takes her son hostage while trying to reach the submarine. She overhears Faber on the radio and knows that he is a spy. She must stop him at all costs. In a thrilling conclusion she signals for help and shoots Faber as he is trying to get to the U-boat. This was a very good movie.Read full review
