The authors of Essential Cell Biology did an excellent job with this 2nd Edition Book. It is very concise and thorough in it's explanations of cellular processes. The book has excellent diagrams that follow along with the reading so it makes it very easy to conceptualize what is going on. At the end of each chapter there are questions which test you on what you learned throughout a particular section, which were pretty helpful for identifying where my strengths and weaknesses were. The only thing that I didn't like about the book is that during the reading it would refer you to a diagram and most of the time it wouldn't be on the same page so I found myself flipping back and forth between pages to follow a particular diagram that corresponded to the reading.
Very thorough information about the cell, its contents and functions -- lots of information, but not a quick read

Essential Cell Biology so far has been one science textbook that I can actually get through and feel like I understood. I know what were main points, and somehow I'm able to retain all the processes and details that I read about. The formatting is a little weird, but nothing you can't adjust to. I also think some of the paintings of scientific subjects is a little odd.
From what I have seen so far and from what I have checked for, this is very similar to the 3rd edition. If you need a 3rd edition, get this, its so much cheaper and will work no problem. I am currently using it in place of a 3rd edition, I haven't been in the class long, but I compared the two books, they are very similar.
This book is great since it has many colorful illustrations and very well written text. It also asks conceptual questions on the margins based on the materials you read, thus helping you in future standarized exams like the MCAT.
