I rate this book average because it showcases the brilliant characterizations and slices of life that make Martha Grimes brilliant. But I found the preoccupation with Jury's increasingly bizarre sex/love life more than a little distracting and the increasing use of inner monologue a bit annoying. The fact that the case is not "solved" in the conventional sense of firmly identifying the perpetrator is a marked departure for Grimes and jarring from the perspective of expecting a solid British-style murder mystery. Like most Grimes addicts, I wouldn't say avoid this one, but don't expect the deep down satisfaction of her earlier novels.
Martha Grimes gives us another Jury mystery. At times funny, at times gut wrenching but always entertaining and very well written. If you have not read this series, start at the beginning. And enjoy every one, as i have

My husband and I both read anything and everything that Martha Grimes writes pertaining to Richard Jury. We both thought this book was great but not her greatest. I just hope her next one completes the issue of what happened to Jury's love interest as it was a bit unsettling to not know. I recommend this book to all Martha Grimes' fans.
I was very pleased with this new book from one of my favorite authors. I thoroughly enjoyed the story as I am familiar with all the main characters. The book was in perfect condition including dust jacket.
My favorite author! I have never experienced such excellent British mystery written in such an entertaining way. Superintendent Jury is the detective, with Melrose plant heading the cast of hilarious characters in this superb series.
